NC State (6-0) at Purdue (5-1)
GAME NOTES: Looking to remain unbeaten as they hit the road for the first time all season, the NC State Wolfpack will travel to face the Purdue Boilermakers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Mackey Arena on Tuesday.
NC State has played all six games at PNC Arena in Raleigh, and all six games have resulted in wins. The Wolfpack held on to down Boise State, 60-54, in the team's most recent outing.
Purdue hosts NC State Tuesday sporting a 5-1 overall record. The Boilermakers have won two in a row, which includes a tight 87-85 overtime victory over BYU in the team's last meeting in the Maui Invitational. The only loss Purdue has suffered goes back to Hawaii, when the team dropped an 88-79 decision against Kansas State.
These programs have met a total of four times on the court in their series history, and NC State owns wins in all four of those meetings. The last time the sides met was during the 2004-05 campaign.
NC State held a 10-point lead over Boise State as the team's broke for the locker rooms at the half in the Wolfpack's most recent contest. Although the Broncos made a bit of a run in the second half, the home squad was able to fend off a complete comeback to remain unbeaten. Ralston Turner and Trevor Lacey each scored 14 points to pace the Wolfpack, who collectively shot 42.6 percent from the floor in the win. Anthony Barber chipped in 10 points for NC State, while four different players brought down a team-best six rebounds.
Lacey, the Alabama transfer in his first year of eligibility with the Wolfpack, currently leads the team in scoring with a 17.3 ppg average through six games played. His 6.5 rpg mark is second on the team only to Lennard Freeman's 8.8 rpg average. Turner checks in at second on the team with a 12.8 ppg average, followed by Barber's 12.5 ppg mark. The squad, which averages 76.7 ppg this season, is using more of a team-scoring effort after the departure of star T.J. Warren to the NBA.
Purdue held a five-point lead over BYU in the team's last outing, but the Boilermakers allowed the Cougars to erase that advantage in the second half to force overtime. In the extra session, Purdue hit on 3-of-7 from the floor while BYU could only make 1-of-5 shots to hand the Boilermakers the win. Vince Edwards scored a team-best 25 points and added nine rebounds, while Rapheal Davis contributed 18 points - 10 of which came at the free-throw line. A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas each scored 12 points to round out the double-digit scorers for Purdue.
Edwards leads Purdue in scoring entering this game against NC State, but by a slim margin. The forward is netting 12.7 ppg for the Boilermakers, followed closely by Kendall Stephens' 12.3 ppg average. Haas, a player who typically comes off the bench, is scoring 11.8 ppg, and Davis adds 10.7 ppg to a team that comes into its seventh contest scoring 81.2 ppg. Edwards also leads the team in rebounding, bringing down 6.7 boards per outing.
This clash should be a good one, and a very good test for the unbeaten Wolfpack as they play in front of a hostile crowd for the first time this season. Purdue has a solid core of scorers and role players, and has played exceptionally well on defense. But the relatively light non-conference schedule may be a part of that, so NC State will give the Boilermakers a run for their money.
