Arkansas State (2-2) at Purdue (7-2)
GAME NOTES: The Arkansas State Red Wolves hit the road once again to take on the Purdue Boilermakers in non-league play at Mackey Arena.
Arkansas State has won two straight after losing its first two games of the season. Most recently, the Red Wolves claimed a 95-68 win over NAIA foe Belhaven last Saturday. Beginning with this contest, they will play three straight and five of their next six on the road.
Purdue has already played nine games compared to ASU's four games played to this point. The Boilermakers will wrap up a four-game homestand here as they hope to go 3-1 in that stretch. They are coming off Monday's 63-43 triumph over IPFW.
This bout marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams.
The Red Wolves were simply too much for an overmatched Belhaven squad, as they shot 50 percent from the floor and knocked down 13-of-27 3-pointers (.481). They also converted 14-of-15 free throws in addition to assisting on 20 of 34 field goals. Sean Gardner led the way with 28 points, and Anthony Livingston recorded his first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Defensively, however, ASU allowed Belhaven to knock down 11 threes (.367). Livingston is averaging a team-best 20.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while shooting 63 percent from the floor through four games.
The Boilermakers boast four players averaging double figures, led by Isaac Haas with 12.0 ppg to go along with 5.4 rpg. A 69.1 percent shooter from the floor, Haas drew his first start against IPFW and tallied 10 points and five boards in 18 minutes of floor time. Reserves A.J. Hammons (10.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg) and Kendall Stephens (11.8 ppg) each scored 13 points in the win, with Hammons adding 12 rebounds and five blocks in his 22 minutes. Vince Edwards (11.4 ppg, 6.7 rpg) finished with only six points for the Boilermakers, who held IPFW to 28.6 percent shooting.
The Red Wolves have hardly been tested to this point, but that will change when they enter Mackey Arena. Livingston is no doubt a concern for the Boilermakers defensively, but they should be able to win this one without too much trouble.
