Rhode Island (5-2) at Providence (6-3)
GAME NOTES: The Providence Friars will try to snap a three-game losing streak as they host their in-state foe Rhode Island Rams in a non-conference affair Wednesday at Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Rhode Island brings a 5-2 record into the contest, and has won two of its last three games. The Rams easily took it to Southern Miss in their last outing, defeating the Golden Eagles on the road, 75-43.
Providence was 6-0 to start the season, then the Friars made trips to visit Kentucky and Boston College. The squad returned home to face in-state rival Brown, but the Bears pulled off the upset of the Friars, 77-67, on Monday.
Providence has faced no single program more than Rhode Island in its basketball history. The Friars own a 70-56 all-time lead over the Rams, which includes a 50-49 road victory over URI last season.
In a game that Rhode Island dominated from start to finish, the Rams didn't allow Southern Miss to take the lead once in the 75-43 blowout in Hattiesburg. URI held a commanding 35-17 advantage over the Golden Eagles at the half, and received a solid contribution from its bench. Hassan Martin led all Rams scorers in the contest with 13 points, while Jared Terrell contributed a dozen on 5-of-10 shooting. Rhode Island shot 55.8 percent from the floor in the win, and held Southern Miss to just 39.5 percent shooting, which included a 3-of-15 mark from 3-point range.
The Rams have played well on both ends of the floor this season, netting a total of 70.6 ppg on 47.8 percent shooting, while holding their opponents to 57.0 ppg on an even 40 percent mark from the floor. E.C. Matthews leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.1 ppg. Martin checks in at second in the category, netting 11.4 ppg with a 6.4 rpg mark that serves as the team's high. And Terrell rounds out the trio of double-digit point scorers for Rhode Island this season, adding in 10.7 ppg.
For Providence, going up against Brown seemed like a game to get the Friars back in the win column. But a strong second half for the Bears, which included 48.1 percent shooting from the floor and a 16-of-19 mark from the free-throw line, helped them down their cross-town rivals at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. LaDontae Henton and Kris Dunn each netted 16 points to pace Providence, with Henton adding in eight rebounds and Dunn chipping in with six boards and eight assists. Tyler Harris contributed 13 points and six more rebounds to the losing effort.
Henton is a force to be reckoned with this season, averaging 19.3 ppg and 5.7 rpg to lead the team, adding in 11 assists and 16 steals with a 47.4 percent shooting mark from the field. Harris is second on the squad netting 12.4 ppg, followed by Dunn's 11.4 ppg mark. Dunn has taken over the role of point guard, and leads the Friars with 54 assists on the season. As a unit, Providence is scoring 67.8 ppg and allowing 61.6 ppg to opponents.
The time to get back in the win column for the Friars was on Monday, considering the Rams have been hot to start the season and will likely present more difficult matchups than the Bears. The home advantage should help a bit, but Providence seems to be reeling after three straight losses.
