Oregon Ducks VS. Mississippi Rebels

Ole Miss (5-2) at Oregon (5-2)

GAME NOTES: The Oregon Ducks conclude a three-game homestand at Matthew Knight Arena on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Ole Miss Rebels in non- conference action.

Ole Miss rebounded from a season-opening loss by ripping off five straight victories, but its winning streak came to an end on Wednesday at home against TCU as it suffered a 66-54 loss. The setback came on the heels of a championship run in the Emerald Coast Classic, where the Rebels defeated Cincinnati (66-54) in the title game.

Oregon lost back-to-back games to nationally-ranked foes Michigan (70-63) and VCU (77-63) in the Legends Classic in Brooklyn last month, but it has turned things around with two straight wins to pull to 5-2. The Ducks most recently dismissed NAIA program Concordia on Wednesday, 94-63.

In the first-ever meeting between the programs nearly a year ago to the day on Dec. 8, 2013 in Oxford, Oregon won in overtime in a shootout, 115-105.

The Rebels battled through three ties and 10 lead changes early in their contest with TCU in their SEC/Big 12 Challenge contest but fell apart in the second half, falling behind by as many as 19 points down the stretch. They were awful from the field on the night, shooting just 17-of-57 (.298), and they were also plagued by losing the rebounding battle, 43-33. Stefan Moody led the way with 12 points but did so on just 3-of-11 from the field. Sebastian Saiz and LaDarius White scored nine points apiece in the setback.

It was clearly a down performance for Ole Miss, but the team hasn't wowed anyone with its offensive showing this season, as it shoots less than 42 percent from the field for 69.0 ppg. Luckily its stellar scoring defense (61.4 ppg) has helped bail it out. Jarvis Summers (13.7 ppg) and Moody (12.9 ppg) are the leading scorers, but their production is largely predicated on volume, as neither shoots greater than 37 percent from the field. White rounds out the double-digit scorers with 11.7 ppg.

The Ducks did what was expected of them against lower-level competition earlier in the week, as they outshot Concordia from the field, 52.5 percent to 35.5 percent, and dominated the rebounding battle, 60-30, en route to the easy 31-point victory. Joseph Young was outstanding with a game-high 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Elgin Cook shot 9-of-10 from the field for 19 points, Dillon Brooks (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Jordan Bell (10 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks) both tallied double-doubles, while Dwayne Benjamin added 11 points.

Oregon is known for its high-octane offensive attack. The squad shoots nearly 46 percent from the field and knocks down more than eight 3-pointers per game for 81.3 ppg, and it boasts an impressive scoring defense (66.9 ppg) and rebounding margin (+10.4) as well. Young (20.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 5.1 apg) is one of the nation's top scorers and he's nearly automatic at the free-throw line (36-of-37). Brooks (13.9 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Cook (11.9 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Benjamin (8.2 ppg, 8.6 rpg) and Bell (6.0 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 3.4 bpg) make up one of the best forward rotations in the country.

Ole Miss simply does not have the offensive firepower to keep pace with Oregon, especially in Eugene.
