IUPUI (10-20) vs. Oral Roberts (17-13)
GAME NOTES: The quarterfinal round of the Summit League Tournament comes to a close late on Sunday as the sixth-seeded IUPUI Jaguars take on the third- seeded Oral Roberts Golden Eagles at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
The winner will advance to the semifinal round of the tournament Monday.
IUPUI finished the 2014-15 campaign with a terrible 10-20 overall record, which included a 6-10 mark in league play. The Jaguars limp into the tournament, having lost three of their last four games to close out the regular season, which was capped off by an 87-80 double-overtime loss to Nebraska-Omaha.
Oral Roberts moves into postseason play with some momentum. The Golden Eagles have won three of their last four games, including the last two in the regular season, which bumped their record to 10-6 against Summit League competition. Oral Roberts took down Denver, 60-57, last Saturday.
The Golden Eagles and Jaguars met twice during the regular season, and neither outcome favored IUPUI. Oral Roberts captured a 69-61 overtime victory at home in January, and then took to the road to defeat the Jaguars, 78-68, to earn the regular-season sweep.
IUPUI had to come back from a five-point halftime deficit on Saturday against Omaha, but the Jaguars were able to pull it off and knot the score at 71-71 when the regulation buzzer sounded. Both sides only netted two points in the first overtime, but the Mavericks doubled up IUPUI in the second extra session, 14-7, to earn the seven-point victory. Marcellus Barksdale netted 18 points with five assists to pace the Jaguars before he fouled out. Aaron Brennan chipped in 14 points and P.J. Boutte scored 13 with eight rebounds. Mason Archie tallied 11 points, and Josh James grabbed 10 boards to pace the squad in the loss.
The Jaguars had some serious issues with their offense throughout the course of the season. IUPUI was led by Barksdale in the scoring department, though the junior guard netted only 9.7 ppg in 30 starts. DavRon Williams was the next closest for the Jaguars at 7.8 ppg, while Williams also grabbed a team- best 6.0 rpg and blocked 22 shots to lead the squad. IUPUI only netted 60.9 ppg as a unit on 42.8 percent shooting, and had some trouble on the other end of the floor as well by allowing opponents to score 67.4 ppg. Boutte led the team in scoring the last time IUPUI played Oral Roberts with 19 points off the bench.
Oral Roberts hung on to defeat Denver last Saturday after the Golden Eagles connected on a healthy 52.5 percent of their shots from the field. Obi Emegano stood out with 25 points and five rebounds in the win, though he did turn the ball over four times. Denell Henderson chipped in 13 points, and Aaron Young rounded out the team's double-digit scorers in the win with 10 points. The Golden Eagles limited the Pioneers to just 43.9 percent shooting in the contest, with a 7-of-21 mark from long distance.
Emegano had a stellar season leading Oral Roberts on the offensive end of the floor. The redshirt junior guard, who transferred from Western Illinois, finished with a team-leading 18.1 ppg, which also ranked second in the league, after he connected on 46.9 percent of his shots from the floor. Korey Billbury was the only other player for the Golden Eagles to average a double-digit scoring mark at 14.4 ppg, but the guard was suspended at the end of February for disciplinary reasons, which leaves Emegano as the only legitimate scoring threat. Henderson tops the squad with 5.2 rpg and 42 blocked shots, while Emegano becomes the team's active leader in assists with 65. The Eagles are netting 69.8 ppg this season, and are allowing 68.5 ppg to opponents.
Oral Roberts was able to get the better of the Jaguars twice in the regular season, and unless IUPUI's offense somehow managed to vastly improve in the last week, the Golden Eagles should be able to snag a third win over the Jags to advance.
