Richmond (1-0) at Old Dominion (1-0)
GAME NOTES: Following a convincing season-opening win over Radford, the Richmond Spiders will be looking to make it two games in a row as they travel to face the Old Dominion Monarchs in a non-conference tilt at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
Richmond took down Radford to open its season, winning by a 64-46 margin. The team will have to figure out life without Cedrick Lindsay, who graduated after last season. Lindsay only played in 21 games in 2013-14, however, due to a knee injury.
Old Dominion asserted its dominance against UNC Wilmington on Saturday in the team's season opener, winning by a 76-56 margin. This game against Richmond will be the team's second in a row at the Constant Convocation Center before the team sets off to the Virgin Islands.
These two programs have met many times on the floor before, with Old Dominion holding a slight 29-25 all-time series advantage. Richmond has only taken seven out of 22 contests in Norfolk before, but the Spiders have won three in a row over the Monarchs in the series.
Last season, Richmond was ranked last in the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring (66.5 ppg), assists (10.6 apg) and rebounding (32.5 rpg), so the Spiders have some work to do if they want to make an improvement from a year ago. Kendall Anthony will be the focal point of Richmond's roster this season as he handles the point guard duties, but also provides a scoring spark for the team. ShawnDre' Jones will get an opportunity to be a primary scorer for the Spiders as well after shooting 38.2 percent from 3-point range a season ago.
Richmond was led by Anthony in the team's first win over Radford. The guard posted 18 points in 35 minutes of action on the floor. Terry Allen chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds, and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds. TJ Cline came off the bench to round out the double-digit scorers, chipping in 11 points. Richmond will need much more offense as it moves forward, especially when the Spiders start A-10 play.
Old Dominion finished with an 18-18 record that included a 9-7 mark in Conference USA play last season. But coach Jeff Jones took a five-win team in the 2012-13 season and turned it into last year's 18-win campaign, which tied for the greatest turnaround in all of Division I basketball. The Monarchs return seven of the team's top eight players from 2013, including guard Aaron Bacote, who led Old Dominion in scoring as a sophomore with 15.5 ppg. Forward Richard Ross (9.9 ppg, team-best 7.0 rpg) will be counted on to lead the ground of players underneath the basket once again. Guard Keenan Palmore may need to pick up some of the production left behind by Dimitri Batten, who graduated after scoring 11 ppg last season.
Trey Freeman led ODU with 23 points in the decisive win over UNC Wilmington, adding four assists to his stat line. Jonathan Arledge turned in a 19-point, nine-rebound performance, and Bacote scored 10 in the win. Denzell Taylor came off the bench to record 12 rebounds - a team high.
The Ted Constant Convocation Center has never really been a friendly place for Richmond, but the Monarchs have struggled to keep pace with the Spiders in recent meetings. Expect more of a learning curve for both teams without top players from a season ago, but the Spiders should be able to pull it together on the road with solid defense.
