OLD DOMINION MONARCHS

Old Dominion Monarchs

Old Dominion Monarchs VS. Georgia St. Panthers

Georgia State (6-2) at Old Dominion (7-1)

GAME NOTES: Attempting to improve on a five-game win streak, the Georgia State Panthers will hit the road to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs in a non- conference clash at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Wednesday.

Georgia State fell just short of reaching the NCAA Tournament with a loss in the Sun Belt Conference final to Louisiana last year, but this season the Panthers are roaring back at 6-2 with five straight wins. They took down Green Bay, 72-48, in their last outing.

The Monarchs of Old Dominion have began strong as well, entering the contest sporting a 7-1 record with four consecutive wins under their belt. ODU easily handled North Carolina A&T, 85-48, in the team's most recent contest.

This will be the 21st meeting between Georgia State and Old Dominion in the programs' all-time series history. ODU holds a 15-5 advantage over the Panthers, but Georgia State has won the last three meetings, including a matchup last season in Atlanta, 79-73.

Offensively, the Panthers were stellar against a strong Green Bay team. Georgia State connected on 53.1 percent of their shots in the game, while they also held the Phoenix to just 28.8 percent shooting from the floor. R.J. Hunter netted a team-best 26 points in the victory, while T.J. Shipes contributed an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double. Ryan Harrow added 17 points with eight assists, making 7-of-16 shots from the floor.

The team's offense has revolved around Hunter and Harrow this season, who are not only the leading scorers, but the only two players with double-digit point averages for GSU. Hunter tops the team with a 23.3 ppg mark, followed closely by Harrow's 19.9 ppg. As a unit, the Panthers are netting 77.2 ppg on an impressive 50.9 percent shooting touch, while defensively they are holding opponents to 65.1 ppg. Harrow's 48 assists are a team best, and Shipes' 6.1 rpg is the team's high entering the clash with ODU.

Speaking of strong offensive performances, Old Dominion took it to North Carolina A&T thanks to 54.1 percent shooting from the floor in the contest, despite the fact that ODU hit on just 26.1 percent of its 3-point tries in the game that featured zero lead changes. Richard Ross topped out at 12 points to lead the Monarchs, while Ambrose Mosley added 11 and both Aaron Bacote and Nik Biberaj chipped in with 10 points apiece. Bacote led the team with eight assists, and brought down six rebounds as well.

Although Trey Freeman led Old Dominion with seven rebounds in the contest against NC A&T, his four points scored didn't do his team-leading scoring average any favors. Still, the guard leads the team this season with 16.6 ppg, adding in a team-high 26 assists and eight steals to his resume. Ross is the only other ODU player to average a double-digit point total, netting 10.6 ppg coming into the meeting with Georgia State. The Monarchs are netting 68.1 ppg and are giving up 58.5 ppg to opponents.

Old Dominion has the homecourt advantage in this one, but Georgia State's offense is simply too explosive for the Monarchs to be able to contain. With Hunter and Harrow, and boosted by the presence of former Louisville guard Kevin Ware in the backcourt, the Panthers are way too athletic.

Predicted Outcome

Georgia State 73, Old Dominion 65
