Recap: Northwestern vs. Elon
Evanston, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - In an overtime thriller, reserve Tre Demps scored 21 points and led the undefeated Northwestern Wildcats over the Elon Phoenix, 68-67, in a Cancun Challenge home game at Welsch-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats' (4-0) Vic Law had 16 points and four rebounds in the victory. Alex Olah contributed down in the paint with 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Elon's (1-2) Tanner Samson connected on eight of his 13 3-point attempts and finished with 24 points. Reserve Elijah Bryant scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, but at the same time was charged with eight of his team's 15 turnovers.
Elon entered halftime with a slim 29-27 lead over Northwestern. Elon shot well from beyond the arch in the opening twenty minutes, connecting on four of eight 3-point attempts. The Wildcats however were doing a much better job of getting to the foul line, as they finished the first half with 12 free throw attempts to the Phoenix's three.
Northwestern's Bryan McIntosh made a layup with 1:04 left in regulation to tie the score, 61-61. Demps had a chance to prevent overtime but missed a jumper with four seconds on the clock. Northwestern shot an impressive 50 percent from the field in the second half.
Elon led for most of overtime until Demps hit a jumper with 51 seconds left to give the Wildcats the lead for good.
Although Elon finished with an impressive 55.6 shooting percentage from beyond the arch, they made only seven of their 13 free-throw attempts.
