Northern Arizona Lumberjacks VS. Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners

Texas-San Antonio (2-3) at Northern Arizona (2-5)

GAME NOTES: The Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners will face their first road test of the season on Wednesday night, as they head to Walkup Skydome for a non- conference tilt with the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.

Although UTSA played all five of its games on its home floor, it sits with just a 2-3 record after losing its last two. The Roadrunners most recently coughed up a late lead against Southern Utah on Sunday afternoon and suffered a heartbreaking 93-92 setback.

NAU was busy with the Emerald Coast Classic last week. After suffering preliminary-round losses to Ole Miss (80-74) and Middle Tennessee (65-53), the Lumberjacks headed to Florida for the later rounds, beating Southern University (70-63 in OT) and losing to NC Central (40-36) to bring them to 2-5 on the season.

The teams played for the very first time last season in San Antonio, with NAU coming away with a 74-63 victory.

The Roadrunners held a six-point lead in the final minute against SUU but collapsed down the stretch, losing by one at the buzzer on a last-second 3- pointer. After shooting a lofty 56.3 percent from the field in the first half, UTSA's efficiency dipped to 43.5 percent in the second stanza, and while it had plenty of opportunities at the free-throw line, it had trouble cashing in by shooting just 28-of-46 (.609). All five starters scored in double figures in the loss, led by 29 points from Ryan Bowie. Jeromie Hill tallied 17 points and nine rebounds, Kaj-Bjorn Sherman scored 16 points, while Keon Lewis (15) and Larry Lewis, Jr. (11) combined to hand out 11 assists.

On the season, UTSA puts up an impressive 76.6 ppg, but it nearly allows that much on the other end of the floor (73.6 ppg). Hill (16.4 ppg, 8.2 rpg) and Bowie (15.8 ppg, 7.0 rpg) are both multi-faceted performers who shoot an identical 50.8 percent from the field. Keon Lewis is the only other player to score in double figures with 14.8 ppg, but three others net between 9.4 and 8.6 ppg.

In a defensive struggle in their finale of the Emerald Coast Classic, the Lumberjacks held a five-point lead early in the second quarter only to lose control of the contest following a 17-5 NCCU run. They held their opponent to only 33.3 percent field goal shooting, but unfortunately they were even worse at 31.7 percent, and a woeful free-throw shooting effort (4-of-12) certainly didn't help matters in the four-point loss. The only player to finish in double figures with 13 points was Quinton Upshur, who chipped in seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals as well.

NAU typically isn't as bad offensively as it showed against NCCU, but it has been prone to struggles with just 60.6 ppg on 38 percent from the field, which has negated an impressive scoring defense (66.3 ppg). Upshur paces the modest attack with 13.4 ppg and he makes 2.6 3-pointers per game at a 40 percent clip. Kris Yanku (10.6 ppg) and Aaseem Dixon (9.7 ppg) have also been solid.

UTSA did not look impressive during its season-opening homestand, and while NAU has experienced plenty of issues of its own, its homecourt advantage should be enough to capture a quality non-conference win.
