Western Michigan (5-2) at Northeastern (5-2)
GAME NOTES: The Northeastern Huskies will attempt to rebound from a loss with cross-town rival Harvard when they host the Western Michigan Broncos in a non- conference matchup Saturday at Matthews Arena.
Western Michigan won't be an easy out, considering the Broncos are on a two- game win streak with an emotional 68-66 victory over San Diego serving as the team's latest victory. The Broncos are 5-2 on the season entering this clash.
Northeastern sports an identical 5-2 ledger this season, but the Huskies have dropped two of their last three games played, including the 60-46 setback against Harvard. The team's last win wasn't a very convincing one - a 57-48 edging of Fairfield.
These two programs have only met one time before on the court. That contest was played back in the 2009 campaign, which saw Western Michigan come away with the lopsided 75-60 victory.
Western Michigan sought revenge against San Diego in the team's latest outing after the Toreros took down the Broncos in a regional matchup as part of the Wooden Legacy tournament. The second meeting between WMU and USD went in favor of the Broncos after they shot 43.1 percent from the field and 22-of-24 from the free-throw line. Connar Tava poured in a team-best 23 points before fouling out of the contest, while David Brown chipped in with 14 points and seven assists, which included the go-ahead layup with one second on the clock that broke the 66-66 tie. Tucker Haymond netted 10 points with eight rebounds in the victory as well.
Tava has retaken the scoring lead on the team after his 23-point outburst against San Diego. The forward/guard combo is netting 15.7 ppg on 57.8 percent shooting to top the squad. Haymond (13.9 ppg) and Brown (13.6 ppg) are the next closest to the scoring lead, but they both contribute to the 76.0 ppg mark that Western Michigan achieves on average. Austin Richie rounds out the team's double-digit scorers with a 13.1 ppg average. Tava grabs a team-best 6.1 rpg, and Brown is dishing out 4.0 apg to lead the Broncos.
Northeastern suffered through a dismal offensive performance against Harvard on Wednesday night, as the Huskies finished the contest shooting just 33.3 percent from the floor, which included a 2-of-10 mark from 3-point range. Meanwhile Harvard connected on 52.2 percent of its shots in the game, which allowed the Crimson to bury the Huskies at home. Scott Eatherton led Northeastern with 16 points in the contest, adding in six rebounds. Reggie Spencer was the only other Husky to record a double-digit total, as he finished the game with 10 points and eight boards.
Eatherton leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, checking in at 15.7 ppg and 6.4 rpg. David Walker comes in right behind Eatherton at 11.9 ppg, averaging a team-high 3.3 apg. The Huskies have built a sturdy defense through the first seven games of the season, allowing opponents to net 60.0 ppg on 45.5 percent shooting. The Huskies themselves are scoring 62.4 ppg, but that will have to improve against Western Michigan.
Northeastern has a strong homecourt advantage at Matthews Arena, but lately the team hasn't been able to put up the offensive numbers to support a successful run. Western Michigan is riding high from the victory over San Diego, and after a week of rest, the Broncos should be ready to go on the road.
