Northeastern Huskies VS. Delaware Blue Hens

Delaware (10-19) vs. Northeastern (20-11)

GAME NOTES: The Colonial Athletic Association's quarterfinal round of the conference tournament wraps up on Saturday night with a matchup pitting the sixth-seeded Delaware Blue Hens against the third-seeded Northeastern Huskies at Royal Farms Arena.

The winner of this contest will advance through to the semifinal round of the conference tournament Sunday.

Delaware heads into its first league postseason match having won its last two games. The Blue Hens took down Towson in the regular-season finale last Saturday, 65-60, to improve to an even 9-9 in conference play, which allotted them the sixth seed.

Northeastern, which garnered the third seed in the tournament despite owning the best overall record in the league at 20-11, has won three of its last four games heading into its first-round matchup. The Huskies defeated College of Charleston, 65-56, in the regular-season finale last weekend to pull even with three other CAA teams at 12-6 in conference play.

Delaware and Northeastern met twice during the 2014-15 regular season, with each team taking a win when playing on the road. The Blue Hens had the last laugh in a 73-68 edging of the Huskies in Boston back on Feb. 7.

Delaware and Towson battled back and forth all game long last Saturday, with each team taking a lead by no more than seven points at any point in the contest. The Hens finished the game shooting 43.4 percent from the field, and were able to get the advantage over Towson from the free-throw line, connecting on 15-of-23 in the win compared to 4-of-10 for the Tigers. Kory Holden scored 17 points to pace Delaware, adding in four assists. Maurice Jeffers netted 15 points with seven rebounds, and Marvin King-Davis tallied a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Kyle Anderson scored nine points in the season-ending win over Towson, which fell below his team-leading scoring average at 14.6 ppg. Holden is second on the squad with 12.1 ppg, adding in a team-leading 139 assists, while Cazmon Hayes rounds out a trio of double-digit scorers for the Blue Hens this season at 11.5 ppg. King-Davis sports a team-best rebounding mark at 5.7 boards per outing, and is just shy of the double-digit scoring benchmark at 9.9 ppg for a Delaware team netting 66.0 ppg on 40.8 percent shooting. The Blue Hens have been awful on the defensive end of the floor, allowing opponents to score 72.2 ppg, which ranks last in the league.

Northeastern actually trailed College of Charleston as the two CAA teams broke for halftime last weekend, 33-32, after the host Cougars netted 54.6 percent of their first-half field-goal attempts. But it was Northeastern that came surging back in the second period behind 45 percent shooting that allowed the visitors to regain the advantage and hang on for the season-ending victory. David Walker scored 19 points to pace the team, adding in six rebounds. Zach Stahl chipped in with 11 points and seven boards, and T.J. Williams and Scott Eatherton each netted 10 for Northeastern.

Eatherton has made his presence felt this season for the Huskies, leading the team in both scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg), adding in 38 blocked shots and a 58.7 shooting percentage (ranked second in the CAA). He was helped out by a host of other scorers, which include Walker (13.3 ppg), Williams (10.4 ppg) and Quincy Ford (10.0 ppg). Walker led the squad with a 3.5 apg mark, followed closely by Williams's 3.3 apg. As a unit, the Huskies netted 68.2 ppg on 48.1 percent shooting from the floor, and allowed 65.0 ppg to opponents.

Northeastern may have gotten hot at the right time down the stretch of the regular season, which could translate into a run for the CAA title. The defending conference champion Blue Hens will have something to say about that, but ultimately Delaware's defense may be its downfall.

Predicted Outcome

Northeastern 73, Delaware 65
