Iona (2-1) at North Texas (3-0)
GAME NOTES: The Iona Gaels look to build off a big win over an ACC opponent when they visit the North Texas Mean Green in a non-conference tilt on Sunday.
Iona opened the 2014-15 season with a 78-73 victory over Cleveland State, but fell at Wofford just four days later, 86-73. The team put some distance between itself and that loss with Friday's rather stunning 85-81 road win at Wake Forest.
North Texas has yet to taste defeat on the young season, thanks to a three- game homestand to start the year. The Mean Green have topped Arkansas- Monticello (84-62), Nicholls State (71-57) and Delaware State (62-55) in succession.
This marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams on the hardwood.
Iona went into Lawrence Joel Coliseum on Friday and knocked off Wake Forest, 85-81, behind A.J. English's 27-point effort and the team's 13 3-pointers. English was responsible for six of those 3-pointers in the win.
It was the first win in program history vs. an ACC opponent in its own building
The Gaels, who were coming off a 86-73 loss at Wofford, got contributions up and down the lineup. Isaiah Williams posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, Schadrac Casimir chipped in 12 points, David Laury tacked on 11 and Kelvin Amayo contributed 10 in the victory.
The margin could have been wider had it not been for Iona only making 12-of-23 from the foul line.
Despite a small sample size, English has been electric in the early going, averaging a robust 21.0 ppg. Laury pours in 16.3 ppg, followed by Casimir and Williams at 14.0 and 11.3 ppg, respectively.
The Mean Green, meanwhile, as also off to a nice start having won their first three games -- all at UNT Coliseum. The latest victory saw them knock off Delaware State, 62-55. Jordan Williams donated a team-high 17 points, while Armani Flannigan added 10 off the bench.
Williams leads North Texas with 16.7 ppg and 4.7 apg, but its the defense that has been the Mean Green's calling card, having held each of their first three opponents to 62 points or fewer.
The Gaels' uptempo attack will certainly bring a challenge, and unless someone other than Williams can step up on the offensive end, it will be tough for North Texas to improve to 4-0, which it has not done since the 1990-91 season.
