Cleveland State (19-14) at NJIT (19-11)
GAME NOTES: The second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament picks up Monday with a clash featuring the Cleveland State Vikings taking on the NJIT Highlanders at Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Cleveland State took on 2014's Mid-American Conference champion Western Michigan in the first round of the tournament five days ago, and easily downed the overmatched Broncos by an 86-57 margin. It was a bounce back for the Vikings, who were ousted in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament by eventual champion Valparaiso.
NJIT moved on from the first round with an 84-77 victory over a New Hampshire squad making its first-ever appearance in a Division I postseason game. The Newark-based Highlanders have won four games in a row coming into this clash, and have won nine of their last 10 overall.
This meeting between Cleveland State and NJIT is the first ever between the programs on the basketball court.
Cleveland State was able to make quick work of Western Michigan in the first- round matchup of the CIT. The Broncos were limited to a mere 30.9 percent shooting from the floor, while the Vikings capitalized on 56.7 percent of their field goal attempts in the lopsided win. Charlie Lee, who started the 2014-15 season serving a suspension, netted 28 points and handed out seven assists to lead the team. Anton Grady tallied a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds, while both Marlin Mason and Trey Lewis added 13 points in the victory.
Lewis leads a trio of double-digit scorers for the Vikings this season at 16.6 ppg. Grady and Lee follow suit with 13.9 ppg and 12.9 ppg, respectively, while all three players are connecting on at least 44 percent of their field-goal tries. Grady tops the squad on the boards with 7.8 rpg, and is averaging a team-best 1.4 blocked shots per outing as well. Lee hasn't missed a game since his six-game suspension to start the season. The point guard checks in with 4.0 apg to lead the team, averaging 35.5 minutes per outing to top the squad. As a unit, Cleveland State is converting 45.3 percent of its shots for 67.2 ppg.
New Hampshire owned a 37-32 lead over NJIT at halftime of the Highlanders' first-round contest. The hosts battled back in the second frame though, by shooting 56 percent from the field, adding in a 21-of-27 mark from the free- throw line to overtake the visiting Wildcats. Damon Lynn netted 25 points, and Tim Coleman scored 23 to pace the Highlanders in the win, while Ky Howard flirted with a triple-double adding 10 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to the winning cause.
NJIT experienced some signature wins this season, most notably against nationally-ranked Michigan (72-70) back in early December. That win, along with a slew of others for the Highlanders, were made possible by a strong offensive effort that nets 71.6 ppg on 46 percent shooting. Lynn leads the charge with 17.5 ppg, followed by Winfield Willis (12.0 ppg), Coleman (11.5 ppg) and Howard (11.3 ppg). Howard's 6.0 rpg mark is the best on the team, while Lynn has dished out a team-high 114 assists on the season. While the team's offense has been stellar, the defense struggles just a bit by allowing 67.0 ppg to opponents.
NJIT has the home advantage in this contest, where the Highlanders have amassed a 13-2 record this season. Cleveland State is vastly different from a New Hampshire squad that gave NJIT trouble last week. The Vikings' offense is much stronger, and will give the Highlanders all they can handle.
