New Mexico Lobos VS. San Jose St. Spartans

San Jose State (2-18) at New Mexico (13-7)

GAME NOTES: The struggling San Jose State Spartans are back in action on Saturday as they compete against the New Mexico Lobos in Mountain West Conference play at WisePies Arena.

The Spartans have yet to win a single conference games this season, but the team's troubles reach far beyond the Mountain West. Over the course of 20 games the program has won only twice and neither of those favorable decisions have been against an opponent from the Division I ranks.

San Jose State opened the 2014-15 campaign with a 67-44 defeat of Bethesda and then went nearly another full month before capturing a 74-63 decision over St. Katherine College. Since that victory on Dec. 9 the Spartans have been sent to the loss column 10 straight times, the latest coming on Wednesday night versus Air Force, 66-52. Needless to say, SJSU owns the last spot in the MWC standings all to itself.

Over on the other side, the Lobos are in jeopardy of dropping three games in a span of four outings for the second time this season. The team has been out of action since last weekend's 63-62 overtime loss at Wyoming, a defeat that moved the program to 5-3 in conference play and into a tie for third place in the standings with Colorado State, Boise State, Utah State and Fresno State entering the weekend.

New Mexico has never lost to the Spartans, winning all eight previous encounters.

The Spartans went from making nine field goals in the first half against Air Force to just eight baskets in the second half, easily enough of a weak effort to send SJSU to the loss column yet again this week. Jaleel Williams provided some fight for the Spartans with 16 points and seven rebounds before fouling out, followed by Darryl Gaynor II with 15 points and Rashad Muhammad 11.

When it comes to conference play, there might be no team in the country that can rival the ineptitude of the Spartans these days as the team averages a woeful 47.4 ppg. The program is shooting a collective 31.8 percent from the field and is a mere 24.6 percent accurate from behind the 3-point line and it certainly doesn't help that the squad is being beaten on the glass by almost eight rebounds per game either. Muhammad, a 33.3 percent shooter from the floor, is responsible for 13.4 ppg and Williams (.338) another 10.0 ppg.

The Lobos were able to get their meeting against Wyoming into overtime last weekend, but then found out just how tough it was to grab a win away from the Cowboys at Arena-Auditorium. The visitors shot a perfect 10-of-10 at the free- throw line in the meeting, but were still outscored by nine at the charity stripe, while being forced into 16 turnovers by the Pokes.

Hugh Greenwood led the charge for UNM with 23 points on 5-of-8 shooting behind the 3-point line and 8-of-14 from the floor overall, the only player to score in double figures for the Lobos in the setback.

Just one point shy of matching his career high set earlier this season against Boston College, Greenwood has now scored at least 22 points in three of the last five outings and during those three favorable efforts he has made good on 17-of-28 shots behind the 3-point line. During conference play he has managed to produce 13.6 ppg while shooting better out on the perimeter (.407) than he has from the floor overall (.395) for a group that is outscoring opponents by a scant 2.6 ppg.

The Lobos continue to be one of two teams in the nation yet to surrender more than 69 points and given the awful offensive showings by San Jose State versus the rest of the Mountain West, that streak is almost assured of carrying over into next week.

Predicted Outcome

New Mexico 67, San Jose State 49
