Air Force (8-7) at New Mexico (11-5)
GAME NOTES: Still searching for their first true road win of the 2014-15 campaign, the Air Force Falcons give it another shot Wednesday night as they tangle with the New Mexico Lobos in Mountain West Conference play at WisePies Arena.
The Falcons do have a win away from home, a 68-55 victory over The Citadel during the All-Military Classic in just the second game of the season at West Point. Over the weekend, Air Force registered a third loss in four games as it bowed to Colorado State at home, 92-87, dropping the program to just 1-3 against the rest of the MWC.
As for the Lobos, they entered the week tied with a surprising Fresno State squad for second in the MWC standings, trailing only nationally-ranked Wyoming. The team has won three of the last four outings, all of them in conference, with a 66-60 victory against Utah State last Saturday being the most recent.
New Mexico holds a commanding 55-19 advantage in the all-time series with Air Force, and is 32-4 at home over the years. The last victory for the Falcons in Albuquerque was in March of 2007 by a score of 60-51, but the Academy has lost seven straight since.
Air Force has just a single win against UNM since 2008, an 89-88 decision two seasons ago at home.
The 87 points tallied by Air Force was the most for the program this season against another Division I opponent and still it wasn't enough to get over on Colorado State. Max Yon dropped in 25 points and handed out seven assists, but he converted only 4-of-12 shots behind the 3-point line and 7-of-11 at the free-throw line where the team as a whole went 11-of-19.
Also lending a hand on offense for the Falcons were Marek Olesinski with 20 points and Justin Hammonds a near triple-double with his 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven dishes in 37 minutes of work. Air Force, which was outscored 24-11 at the charity stripe, allowed the Rams to shoot 52.6 percent from the field.
Scoring in double figures in all but three games, Yon is also the lone double- digit scorer for the Falcons entering play this week with 15.3 ppg. Shooting 42.0 percent behind the 3-point line, Yon is also the leader in assists for the program with 38. As a unit,Air Force is connecting on 39.0 percent on the perimeter, which is considerably better than the competition which has converted only 32.0 percent through 15 games.
Hugh Greenwood planted himself behind the 3-point line and let fly against Utah State at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, dropping six of his 11 attempts, finishing with a team-best 22 points in the victory over the Aggies on Saturday evening. Also scoring in double figures for the Lobos was Deshawn Delaney with 15 points for a team that delivered a 36-22 rebounding advantage and watched USU make only 11-of-20 shots at the charity stripe.
The loss of leading scoring Cullen Neal (17.0 ppg) after just three games should have sent the Lobos reeling, but as it stands the team is getting along just fine. Instead of Neal being the central figure on offense, Delaney and Greenwood now take over with 13.1 and 11.0 ppg, respectively. Greenwood has knocked down 32 of the unit's 74 triples, but his accuracy comes in at a mere 30.8 percent and that has brought his overall shooting from the floor down to 31.3 percent, which is a far cry from Delaney with his 52.6 percent effort overall.
The Falcons have proven that they can pick up the pace on offense when they need to, but they also know that winning in The Pit is no easy task and will be reminded of that yet again on Wednesday night.
