Fresno State (7-9) at Nevada (6-8)
GAME NOTES: Nevada returns home after following its biggest win of the season as the Wolfpack host the Fresno State Bulldogs in Mountain West Conference play at Lawlor Events Center on Saturday.
Nevada has turned things around following a 2-8 start. The Wolfpack have rattled off four straight wins, and none were more impressive than Wednesday's 64-62 road win over rival UNLV.
Marqueze Coleman drilled the go-ahead jumper with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation and the Wolfpack survived a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to pull out their first road win of the season. A.J. recorded a huge double- double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while Eric Cooper finished with 12 points for the victors.
D.J. Fenner, who is shooting only 37.7 percent from the field, leads a trio of double-digit scorers for the Pack with his 12.0 ppg. West places second in that department with 11.5 ppg and is first with both 9.5 rpg and 38 blocks. Coleman, a dismal 24.0 percent shooter out on the perimeter, adds another 10.6 ppg to the attack.
Fresno State improved to 6-1 at home and 7-9 overall Wednesday with a 61-52 win over Utah State. Marvelle Harris scored a game-high 18 points, Julien Lewis added 15 and Alex Davis made all seven of his shots in a season-high 14- point effort. Overall, the Bulldogs connected on 48.1 percent of their shots despite only making 3-of-17 from 3-point range. They dominated down low to the tune of a 39-27 rebounding advantage and never trailed in the second half.
The problems for Fresno State are away from home, where the squad is 1-8, the lone win coming against CSU Bakersfield back on Dec. 6.
Harris has been good wherever the Bulldogs have been playing though, as he is leading the team in points (17.2 ppg), rebounds (5.3 ppg), assists (4.0 ppg) and steals (31). Lewis (12.7 ppg) and Paul Watson (11.3 ppg) are both averaging double figures as well.
While the Bulldogs are scoring 65.2 ppg, they are allowing 64.8 ppg (next-to- last in the MWC) and are struggling from beyond the with 28.7 percent shooting (also next-to-last in the MWC).
Nevada leads the all-time series 51-39, and each team won on the opponent's floor last season. Expect the Wolf Pack to ride the wave of their recent success to another convincing victory.
