NEVADA WOLF PACK

Nevada Wolf Pack

Nevada Wolf Pack VS. California Golden Bears

California (6-1) at Nevada (2-5)

GAME NOTES: The California Golden Bears will attempt to extend a three-game winning streak when they visit the Nevada Wolf Pack for a non-conference affair at Lawlor Events Center on Sunday.

Victories over Cal Poly (72-52), Fresno State (64-57) and Montana (78-76 2OT) have lifted the Golden Bears to a 6-1 overall record and eased the pain of a 71-55 setback against Texas during the 2K Sports Classic at the end of November. They will return home to begin a seven-game homestand next, with the first test coming against Wyoming.

Nevada is trending in the opposite direction, with losses in each of its last five games, including a 68-57 road setback against Long Beach State. Luckily, the Wolf Pack are getting back to work at home, where they won their first two games of the season, but have not been since. They will be at Lawlor Events Center again next time out against Cal State Fullerton.

California outlasted Nevada for a 92-84 victory last season, earning its third straight win over the Wolf Pack and improving to 6-5 in the all-time series in the process.

In its win over Montana, California did just enough to get by, especially in the two overtime sessions when it knocked down 5-of-9 shots from the floor combined. Tyrone Wallace was instrumental in the victory, tallying 22 point, 15 rebounds and five assists, while David Kravish (14 points, seven rebounds ) and Jordan Mathews (13 points) each lent a helping hand.

Wallace has been stuffing the stat sheet for California, leading the team in scoring (17.6 ppg), rebounds (9 rpg) and assists (4.7 apg), while collecting a steal per game. His scoring is even more important with the absence of Jabari Bird (11.7 ppg), who did not play against Montana and is still listed as questionable with a bruised foot. Mathews (15.4 ppg) and Kravish (12.4 ppg, 6 rpg, 2.3 bpg) provide solid scoring efforts as well, with Kravish an excellent defender and shot blocker.

D.J. Fenner scored 17 points, Marqueze Coleman netted 15 and Michael Perez added 10 for Nevada against Long Beach State. The problem was, the rest of the roster didn't lend much support, with the other seven players who got time on the court combining for 15 points on 2-of-22 shooting. As a team, the Wolf Pack connected on only 32 percent from the field, including a 2-of-14 showing from the 3-point arc.

Scoring has been a real struggle for Nevada this season. The Wolf Pack are only posting 58.7 points per game and connecting on 36.9 percent of their shots from the floor. The poor shooting has ruined some strong defensive efforts, as they are only letting up 63.6 points on 38.2 percent accuracy. Fenner (11.6 ppg), Coleman (11.3 ppg), Perez (10.1 ppg) and AJ West (10 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 2.9 bpg) are all averaging in double figures, but the next best scorer is Tyron Criswell (5.1 ppg).

With Nevada's scoring deficiencies, California will have a real leg up in this contest, even if Bird is sidelined once again.
