Nebraska Omaha (2-1) at Nebraska (2-1)
GAME NOTES: With their time in the Top-25 over for the time being, the Nebraska Cornhuskers continue with their non-conference slate as they host the Mavericks of Nebraska Omaha on Tuesday night.
Both teams come in sporting 2-1 records, with Omaha having topped the likes of Central Arkansas (100-75) and Marquette (97-89), sandwiched around a loss at Seattle (98-74). The Mavericks have obviously had very little trouble putting points on the board, but they will need to tighten up on defense if they hope to make a significant push in the Summit League this season.
Nebraska began the season among the nationally ranked, but an overtime loss at Rhode Island this past weekend put an end to the team's solid start. The Huskers had prevailed in their first two games, taking out Northern Kentucky (80-61) and Central Arkansas (82-56) at home. Coach Tim Miles' club will tip off Big Ten Conference action versus Indiana on New Year's Eve.
This bout marks only the third meeting between these two programs, with the Cornhuskers having won the first two.
Devin Patterson and CJ Carter combined for 51 points, and they were joined in double figures by three others as the Mavericks pushed their way past Marquette in what was the program's first-ever win over a team from the Big East Conference. Omaha shot a season-best 57.1 percent from the field, which included a 7-of-17 effort from beyond the arc. A 26-of-30 showing at the foul line also helped matters, as did a resounding 40-24 rebounding advantage. About the only negative in the game for the Mavericks was the fact that they turned the ball over 19 times, with Carter credited with seven miscues and Patterson four of his own. Mike Rostampour logged a double-double consisting of 11 points and 11 boards.
Carter continues to shine, as he is averaging a robust 21.3 ppg thanks to 50 percent shooting efforts from 3-point range and the field overall. Patterson contributes 17.3 points and 6.0 assists per outing, and Rostampour adds 10.0 points and 9.3 caroms per contest for a team that is netting 90.3 ppg, but allowing 87.3 ppg.
Shavon Shields poured in 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but his effort went for naught as Nebraska suffered its first defeat of the season in overtime at Rhode Island this past Saturday. Terran Petteway joined Shields in double figures with 15 points, but the Cornhuskers shot just 37 percent from the field as a team.
Both Petteway and Shields have feasted on the opposition here in the early going, with the former averaging 21 ppg and the latter 19.7 ppg. They are the only two players averaging double figures for a Nebraska squad that is putting up 74.7 ppg while permitting 61.0 ppg. The Huskers are shooting 45.5 percent from the field, but knocking down only 27.6 percent of their 3-point tries. As for the opposition, they are connecting on only 34.5 percent of their total shots, which includes just a 26.5 percent showing from beyond the arc. Nebraska is being outworked on the glass by 3.7 rpg.
As potent as Omaha has been on offense to this point, the team hasn't played well enough at the other end. The Cornhuskers are likely to be an ornery bunch following their first loss of the season, so expect them to feed off the home crowd and get back in the win column.
