Recap: Nebraska vs. Loyola Marymount
Honolulu, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - Terran Petteway scored a game-high 17 points as the Nebraska Cornhuskers squeezed out a 50-42 overtime win against the Loyola Marymount Lions during the semifinals of the Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Joining Petteway in double figures for the Huskers (7-4) were Shavon Shields and Walter Pitchford with 13 and 10 points, respectively, the latter also pulling down a team-best eight rebounds as the squad won for the second time in three outings.
The Lions (3-8), losers of six straight, were paced by Ayodeji Egbeyemi with 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the floor, while Godwin Okonji accounted for a game-high 10 rebounds in the setback.
Both teams struggled to find the basket in the first half, with LMU converting a total of just five field goals on 19 attempts, while Nebraska dropped in seven shots, giving the Cornhuskers a 21-16 advantage at the break.
The second half was much like the first, although this time Nebraska was limited to a meager four field goals on 16 tries. The Lions were not much better as they sank 7-of-21 from the floor, but it was good enough to tighten up the contest down the stretch.
Evan Payne, who shot only 2-of-13 from the floor and missed all seven of his 3-point tries, had a couple of opportunities to put the Lions ahead in the final seconds, but both of his awkward field goal tries missed the mark, leaving the teams tied at 35-35 and on the way to overtime.
The Lions scored the first two points of overtime, but from there Nebraska asserted itself and claimed the win as Petteway converted on back-to-back 3- pointers in the final minutes of the bonus period to give the Huskers a 43-37 advantage.
In a game that featured seven ties and five lead changes, Loyola Marymount was guilty of 20 turnovers and shot just 28.0 percent from the field overall.
Both teams will be back in action on Christmas Day as the Huskers match up against Ohio and the Lions clash with DePaul.
