Indiana (10-3) at Nebraska (8-4)
GAME NOTES: The Indiana Hoosiers and the Nebraska Cornhuskers will close out 2014 by opening their respective Big Ten Conference schedules against one another at Pinnacle Bank Arena on New Year's Eve.
Indiana has gotten off to a 10-3 start but is coming off Saturday's 91-87 overtime loss to Georgetown at Madison Square Garden. Prior to that setback, the Hoosiers had won three straight and six of seven overall, including their second win over a ranked opponent this season.
Nebraska went to Honolulu for the holidays to take part in the Diamond Head Classic. The Cornhuskers beat Ohio in overtime (50-42) and then Loyola- Marymount on Christmas day (71-58) after falling to host Hawaii (66-58) in the opener of the event. They will be home for three of their next four games to kick off conference play.
IU holds a 9-4 lead in the all-time series, but Nebraska swept both meetings last season.
Indiana had three different players eclipse 20 points on Saturday, but Georgetown shot 51.5 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-7 effort in overtime, to seal the win. Yogi Ferrell (17.2 ppg) scored 27 points in the loss and came up big down the stretch, scoring eight straight points for the Hoosiers to close out regulation and then the team's first five points of overtime. His 3-pointer with 12 seconds left forced the extra session. Troy Williams (13.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and James Blackmon Jr. (17.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg) added 23 and 22 points, respectively, and that duo also combined for 15 rebounds and four steals.
Nebraska is led by a couple of standouts on the wing in juniors Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields. Petteway paces the squad with 19.3 ppg, and Shields is not far behind with 17.2 ppg. Both players are averaging better than five rebounds per game, and they have combined to shoot an impressive 45 percent from 3-point range (138-of-308). They each shared game-high scoring honors against Ohio with 22 points apiece. Petteway added 10 rebounds but also committed five turnovers. The Cornuskers held a 21-11 scoring edge at the foul line and also out-rebounded the Bobcats, 39-28.
This is an interesting matchup between two of the Big Ten's better squads. Nebraska spent some time in the AP Top-25 early in the season and is playing at home, but the Hoosiers are deep, talented and can match the Huskers on the glass.
