Boise State (4-1) at NC State (5-0)
GAME NOTES: The NC State Wolfpack continue their season-opening homestand on Friday night when they welcome the Boise State Broncos to PNC Arena for a non- conference clash.
This is the final leg of NC State's six-game homestand to start the season. The Wolfpack are coming off of Wednesday's 84-72 win over Richmond to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2009-10. They are trying to get to 6-0 for the first time under fourth-year coach Mark Gottfried.
Meanwhile, Boise State is playing its third game in seven days as part of a season-opening schedule that will see the team play six of its first seven games on the road. The Broncos rebounded from their first loss with an 86-75 triumph over Idaho Tuesday night at CenturyLink Arena.
This marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams.
Broncos guard Derrick Marks scored a season-high 31 points in that win over Idaho, the most points scored by any Mountain West Conference player in a game this season. Joining him in double figures were Nick Duncan with 15 points, Anthony Drmic with 14, and Mikey Thompson with 12. It was a total team effort for the Broncos, who shot a collective 55 percent from the floor, made 9-of-18 3-pointers, and went 21-of-27 at the foul line. Defensively, however, Boise State allowed Idaho to knock down 11-of-18 threes. Three Broncos are averaging double figures so far on the season, led by Drmic with 16.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Head coach Leon Rice has used eight different players in the starting lineup.
NC State is led by Trevor Lacey with 18.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per tilt. Anthony Barber (13.0 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Ralston Turner (12.6 ppg) have also made steady contributions at the offensive end of the floor. At the other end, BeeJay Anya (5.6 ppg) has already blocked 22 shots, including a school-record 10 rejections in a blowout win over Jacksonville on Nov. 20. As a team, NC State leads the ACC and ranks sixth nationally with 7.8 blocks per game. The Wolfpack swatted away six shots in Wednesday's win over Richmond. Trevor Lacey scored 21 of his career-high 26 points during the first half of that game, while Ralston finished with 23 points. Richmond was held to 30.3 percent shooting from the floor in the second half after hitting 72 percent in the first half.
The Broncos have lost 14 straight road games against teams from the "Power 5" conferences and are just 2-36 all-time in such games. Expect the Wolfpack to keep rolling along at home.
