Oakland (3-5) at Morehead State (4-6)
GAME NOTES: Morehead State continues its busy early season schedule on Saturday afternoon by playing host to the Oakland Grizzlies in a non- conference tilt at Ellis Johnson Arena.
The Eagles have already played 10 games, and have lost their last two. Against UAB on Thursday, Morehead State shot just 34 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 21 times in a 58-48 defeat.
Angelo Warner scored 13 points and Corban Collins added 10 more for the Eagles, who have totaled just 107 points over their last two games after dropping 121 on Kentucky Christian last weekend.
Morehead State has a had a so-so start to the campaign -- the 72-point win over Kentucky Christian notwithstanding. Only Warner has established himself as a consistent scoring threat, as he is pouring in 16.2 ppg on 52.0 percent shooting. Brent Arrington has been solid with 10.6 ppg, but no one else has really stepped up.
Starting point guard Kareem Storey is doling out 6.0 apg, but he has missed the last three games because of an injury.
Oakland has won three of its last four games, but now opens a brutal six-game road trip that has the club taking on the likes of Michigan State, Arizona, Pittsburgh, Clemson and Maryland.
To come out of that stretch with anything to show for it, the Grizzlies will need to summon the shooting prowess they showed against Rochester College on Wednesday, as they drained 57.4 percent from the floor en route to an 84-52 rout.
Oakland scored 50 points in the second half to pull away, and had four players scoring in double figure in the process. Corey Petros led the way with 18 points, Nick Daniels added 17 and Tommie McCune and Jalen Hayes netted 11 and 10, respectively.
When Petros gets going, the Grizzlies are tough to beat. The 6-foot-10 center leads the Horizon League in field goal percentage at .675, and he is averaging 15.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Kahlil Felder paces Oakland in scoring at 15.9 ppg, while McCune is not far behind at 14.0 ppg.
All told, the Grizzlies are putting up a respectable 77.8 ppg, but their opponents have been just as opportunistic at 77.9 ppg.
Oakland won the only previous meeting between these two schools, 82-79, in an overtime clash on Feb. 23, 2013. The Grizzlies, however, have dropped nine straight non-conference games on the road.
If Storey remains out, that streak could come to an end.
