MONMOUTH HAWKS

Monmouth Hawks

Monmouth Hawks VS. Towson Tigers

Towson (3-1) at Monmouth (2-1)

GAME NOTES: The Towson Tigers and Monmouth Hawks will meet in the final game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Multipurpose Activity Center on Sunday afternoon.

Towson has done well for itself during the first two days of the event, topping both Central Connecticut State and Bethune-Cookman. The Tigers are now 3-1 overall, with their next contest being a home matchup against UMBC.

Monmouth, which is the host of this event, also has two wins in as many days. The Hawks started off with a 73-50 rout of Bethune-Cookman before topping Central Connecticut State, 65-50. The two wins have made up for a 64-54 setback against West Virginia in the season opener. The Hawks visit Maryland next to begin a three-game road trip.

In the only previous meeting between the two teams, the Tigers collected a 76-59 victory over the Hawks back in 1983.

Towson may have only shot 38.1 percent from the floor against BCU, but it nailed 28-of-38 attempts at the free-throw line to secure a 63-42 victory. The Tigers also enjoyed a 42-25 edge in rebounds, while limiting the opposition to just 31.9 percent shooting. Four McGlynn, John Davis and Eddie Keith II each scored 10 points in the triumph.

The Tigers certainly haven't been lighting the world on fire offensively. They are averaging just 56.5 points per game so far, but that hasn't mattered all that much, as the opposition is putting up only 54.8. McGlynn (11 ppg) is the only consistent double-digit scorer, although he is shooting a paltry 34.6 percent from the floor. However, he has done a fine job at the foul line, making all 20 of his attempts this season. Davis (7.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and Alex Gavrilovic (7.5 ppg) are the next best scorers, with Gavrilovic doing his damage off the bench.

Led by Justin Robinson's 15-point effort, the Hawks were able to overcome CCSU on Saturday. They shot a meager 43.9 percent from the floor, but that included a 9-of-20 showing from 3-point range. In addition, they held the Blue Devils to 39.1 percent overall shooting. Joining Robinson in double figures were Deon Jones and Andrew Nicholas, who each tallied a dozen points.

Jones (13.3 ppg) is pacing the team at the offensive end. He is doing so with great efficiency, hitting 57.1 percent of his field goal attempts. In addition, he has made 11-of-14 shots from the free-throw line, while leading the way on the boards (5.3 rpg). Robinson (10.3 ppg) and Nicholas (10 ppg) are the next-best scorers for a squad that is averaging 64 ppg.

Having the homecourt advantage has been a great benefit for Monmouth in the first two tests of this event. However, Towson is clearly the best squad the Hawks will face this weekend. If the Tigers continue their defensive dominance, while mixing in some improved offense, they will finish off the weekend without a blemish.
