Purdue (3-1) vs. Missouri (2-2)
GAME NOTES: After falling to the consolation side of the bracket, the Purdue Boilermakers and the Missouri Tigers will duke it out on Tuesday afternoon as part of the Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center.
The winner takes on either Chaminade or BYU in Wednesday's fifth-place game. The losers will attempt to avoid a winless tournament in the seventh-place game.
Purdue had been winners of three straights to open the season, all at home, prior to entering this tournament. In the first round, it fell victim to a 88-79 loss against Kansas State to drop to the consolation bracket.
Missouri had the unenviable task of facing off against No. 2 Arizona in the opening round of this event and fell on the wrong end of a 72-53 decision. The Tigers are now 2-2 on the season.
The Boilermakers have an 8-3 lead in the all-time series with the Tigers, although Missouri won the most recent matchup in December of 2007, 73-63.
The Boilermakers dug themselves a big hole in the first round, going into intermission down by 15 and falling behind by as many as 20 in the second half. They turned things around a bit late in the game, getting to within five with under four minutes remaining, but they would get no closer. They shot an outstanding 54.9 percent from the field on the day, but Kansas State was also hot from the field (.533) and they lost both the rebounding (33-27) and turnover (13-9) battles. Kendall Stephens finished with a team-high 21 points on 5-of-11 from 3-point range. Isaac Haas provided a spark off the bench with 19 points, while Jon Octeus tallied 12 points and six assists.
Purdue has had no problem generating offense this season, as it shoots 52.1 percent from the floor (including 41.2 percent from 3-point range) and has scored at least 77 points in every game. Its effort on the defensive end of the floor has been strong as well in allowing just 53.8 ppg. Stephens (15.3 ppg) has been lights out from beyond the arc at 15-of-29. Haas (13.3 ppg) is shoots just shy of 74 percent from the field, and Vince Edwards brings 11.3 ppg and 6.5 rpg to the table.
The Tigers kept their first-round contest close in the first half, as they went into intermission trailing by just seven, but Arizona was ultimately too much to handle as they eventually suffered the 19-point defeat. They shot only 36.4 percent from the field on the afternoon, which included a 3-of-13 showing from 3-point range, and they were also plagued by a game-high 17 turnovers. Montaque Gill-Caeser paced the losing effort with 13 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the free-throw line, while Johnathan Williams III and Keith Shamburger netted 11 points apiece.
Missouri's defense has been very impressive in the early going this season, as it allows just 61.5 ppg on 39.1 percent field goal shooting, but unfortunately its offense (62.0 ppg, .413 FG percentage) is just barely good enough to support it. Its -2.2 turnover margin doesn't help matters much either. Gill- Caesar is off to a fast start in his freshman season with 15.5 ppg, although he's shooting a mere 37 percent from the field. Wes Clark (11.5 ppg) is the only other player in double figures.
Missouri has the defense to slow down Purdue's offensive attack, but the inconsistent Tigers likely won't have enough firepower to take advantage.
