Oral Roberts (1-0) at Missouri (1-1)
GAME NOTES: The Missouri Tigers will wrap up a season-opening three-game homestand on Wednesday night, as they welcome the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles to Mizzou Arena for a non-conference bout.
ORU has played just one game in the early going this season, as it dismissed Tulsa at home on Saturday, 77-68. It was the Golden Eagles' second straight season-opening win after dropping their previous five lid lifters.
Missouri's season got off to a disappointing start last Friday, as it dropped a 69-61 decision at home to UMKC. The Tigers were able to get back on track on Sunday with a 56-41 triumph over Valparaiso to pull to 1-1.
The Tigers have a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Golden Eagles, most recently taking down an 81-62 decision in Columbia in 2010.
Although the Golden Eagles briefly trailed early in the second half in their opener, they used a 13-0 run late in the game to seal their fate. They only shot 39.6 percent from the field on the night, but they played excellent defense in holding Tulsa to an even lower field goal percentage (.339). ORU also helped itself with an active and effective showing at the free-throw line (32-of-44). Obio Emegano led the way with 26 points, making 14-of-16 at the stripe along the way while adding seven rebounds and four assists as well. Korey Billbury logged a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Bobby Word netted 14 points and Adrion Webber chipped in 10 points.
Missouri too overcame a second-half deficit in its latest game with a late surge. After shooting only 25 percent from the field in the first half, it improved to 53.8 percent in the second stanza on its way to a 15-point victory. Its outstanding defense also went a long way in capturing the win, as it held Valpo to under 33 percent shooting. Wes Clark paced the squad with 16 points, Johnathan Williams added 10 points and both players collected six rebounds.
It's been a rather sluggish start for the Tigers on the offensive end of the floor, as they shot only 38.9 percent from the field for 58.5 ppg, but luckily their opponents are doing even worse (.350, 55.0). Montaque Gill-Caesar (15.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and Clark (14.5 ppg, 3.5 apg) are the top performers, but neither shoot greater than 37 percent from the field.
If Missouri's shooting woes continue, it could be in trouble against a good ORU squad. However, after getting a win under its belt it'll likely start to loosen up, which will allow for more shots to fall en route to another solid victory.
