TCU (7-0) at Ole Miss (5-1)
GAME NOTES: In their first true road test of the season, the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs will clash with the Ole Miss Rebels as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge at Tad Smith Coliseum.
TCU has reaped the rewards of playing at home, or close to it, in its first seven games. After ripping off five straight wins in Fort Worth to start the season, they claimed victories over Bradley (57-49) and Mississippi State (61-52) during the Corpus Christi Coastal Classic. They won't be on the road long, as their next six contests will be back at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.
Ole Miss has won five straight games since falling in a 66-65 final to Charleston Southern in the season opener. The team's most recent victories have been the most impressive, as it downed No. 23 Creighton (75-68) and Cincinnati (66-54) in the Emerald Coast Classic last week. The Rebels will take on Oregon in Eugene next.
These teams last met during the 2011 Paradise Jam, where Ole Miss pulled away for an 80-69 victory. The Rebels have won three of four all-time meetings.
TCU won a brutal contest with Mississippi State last time out. The Horned Frogs connected on 48.9 percent of their shots from the floor overall, but that included a dismal 2-of-12 effort from beyond the arc. They also made a mere 15-of-29 shots at the free-throw line. However, the Bulldogs were held to 36.5 percent shooting, while making only 11-of-20 foul shots themselves. Chris Washburn finished with 12 points and Kenrich Williams recorded a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) off the bench.
Although there is still a lot of basketball to be played, TCU has gotten used to dominating defensive efforts. It is allowing just 54.7 points per game on 34.8 percent shooting, ranking among the top 15 teams in the country in each category. The Horned Frogs couple the defensive success with a 49 percent shooting rate of their own. There is no real standout scorer on the roster, with Kyan Anderson (12.7 ppg) the closest there is to one. However, after Anderson, there are seven players averaging at least 6.5 points per game, including Karviar Shepherd (6.9 ppg, 6.7 rpg), who leads the team in rebounds.
Ole Miss' win over Cincinnati was not only a solid non-conference win, it also earned the Rebels the Emerald Coast Classic championship. In the title game, the Rebels limited the Bearcats to just 30.4 percent accuracy from the field, which helped make up for a 43-31 deficit on the boards. They also connected on 49 percent of their own field goal tries, while Stefan Moody erupted for 26 points.
Just like TCU, Ole Miss has had success in creating poor offensive showings from its opponents. The Rebels are allowing only 60.7 points per game on 34.1 percent shooting. Jarvis Summers (14.7 ppg) is customarily the team's top scorer, as well as the team-leader in assists (3.7 apg). He only had eight points on 2-of-8 shooting against Cincinnati, but he handed out five assists in the win. Moody (13 ppg) and LaDarius White (12.2 ppg) provide additional firepower, with White doing so as a reserve.
This is easily the toughest test of the season for TCU, which won't have a friendly crowd behind it against the Rebels. Ole Miss already proved it can win against quality opponents, and it has yet to be seen just how legitimate TCU is.
