LSU (12-3) at Ole Miss (10-5)
GAME NOTES: The LSU Tigers and Ole Miss Rebels collide at Tad Smith Coliseum on Wednesday in what should be a tight SEC battle.
Ole Miss has won seven of the last eight meetings in a rivalry that dates back over 100 years. The teams have met 205 times, with LSU holding a 117-87 lead in the series.
Ole Miss nearly shocked the college basketball world last week when it took undefeated and top-ranked Kentucky to the brink before eventually losing in overtime. The Rebels recovered nicely by cruising past South Carolina, 65-49, last Saturday behind a 20-point effort from Jarvis Summers. Stefan Moody and Sebastian Saiz added 16 and 10 points, respectively, in the rout. The Rebels' defense held the Gamecocks to 37.5 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers in the wire-to-wire victory.
Summers (14.4 ppg) has scored 20-plus points six times this season, including in three of his last four. He still ranks second in scoring behind Moody, who checks in with 14.8 ppg thanks to 40.0 percent shooting from 3-point range and an amazing 90.0 percent shooting from the foul line. Ole Miss leads the country in free throw percentage (.791) and owns a plus-3.3 rebounding advantage per game of its opponents.
LaDarius White is averaging 12.9 ppg over his last eight games to complement the dynamic scoring duo of Summers and Moody.
LSU followed up its own overtime loss to Missouri in its SEC opener with another thriller, topping Georgia 87-84 in double-overtime on Saturday. The Tigers trailed by nine in the first extra session but pulled even on a Tim Quarterman three-point play with 18 seconds left, capping a 12-3 run over the final 2:21. LSU led most of the second OT, and Quarterman forced a turnover in the closing seconds as Georgia was attempting a potential tying 3-pointer.
Quarterman did a little bit of everything coming off the bench. He poured in a career-high 27 points thanks to six 3-pointers and also added five rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots and three steals in a terrific all-around performance. Jordan Mickey tacked on 17 points and eight boards, followed by Josh Gray and Jalyn Patterson with 15 points apiece.
Leading scorer Jarell Martin was limited to seven points on 3-of-10 shooting before fouling out. It was a rare off day for Martin, who averages 16.8 ppg on 48.4 percent efficiency. He and Mickey have been a handful for opponents down low, as Mickey is averaging a double-double with 15.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per contest. The pair rank second and third, respectively, in the SEC in rebounding, with Martin checking in at 8.6 rpg.
Quarterman (12.7 ppg) and Keith Hornsby (12.1 ppg) are also scoring in double figures, while Gray (9.6 ppg) is not far behind for an offense that ranks third in the SEC with 75.8 ppg.
Both teams have split their first two league games, so getting over that .500 mark is of the utmost importance in terms on confidence and momentum. The advantage in a toss-up usually leans toward the home team, but this will likely be a close affair.
