East Lansing, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Branden Dawson registered a double- double with 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Michigan State Spartans easily defeated the Indiana Hoosiers, 70-50, in Big Ten Conference action at the Breslin Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Spartans (10-5, 1-1 Big Ten), as they won for the second time in three outings, were Denzel Valentine and Gavin Schilling with 15 and 10 points, respectively, the latter adding nine rebounds.
The Hoosiers (11-4, 1-1) were paced by Kevin Ferrell with a game-high 17 points, although he shot just 3-of-10 behind the 3-point line and 6-of-16 from the floor overall. The only other player to make more than a pair of field goals was Robert Johnson who finished 4-of-9 for nine points.
Indiana had a very rough first half, trailing by a 13-2 score less than seven minutes in and shooting only 5-of-28 from the floor in the period overall. The visitors converted a mere 1-of-11 beyond the arc leading up to halftime, trailing by 19 at the break, 36-17.
After hitting on 44.1 percent from the floor through the first 20 minutes, MSU's accuracy rose to an even 50.0 percent in the second half, pushing the lead as high as 30 with 13 minutes to play. The Hoosiers more than doubled their field goal total (12), but still there was little chance of them catching the Spartans as they lost for the second time in three games.
Michigan State crushed the Hoosiers on the glass by a 50-28 margin and also outscored the visitors in the paint, 30-20.
