Dayton (4-1) at Miami-Ohio (2-4)
GAME NOTES: Trying to put a stop to their three-game losing streak, the Miami- Ohio RedHawks will host their intrastate rival Dayton Flyers in a non- conference affair at Millett Hall.
Dayton enters the contest having won two games in a row and sporting a 4-1 record on the season. The Flyers dropped a lone contest to defending national champion UConn in San Juan, Puerto Rico, before Thanksgiving, and have since defeated Boston College (65-53) and Illinois-Chicago (75-41).
Miami-Ohio opened the season with a 2-1 record through three games, but the RedHawks have since dropped three straight to fall to 2-4 early on. The team is coming off a heartbreaking 70-68 loss to Elon on Sunday, and will try to pick up a win at home before hitting the road for two games.
These two in-state rivals have met plenty of times on the court, yet the all- time series is still relatively close. Dayton owns the series lead, 69-61, and has won six of the last seven meetings between the two. They last clashed in 2012 at UD Arena, where Dayton came away victorious.
Dayton's defense was hard at work on Saturday, as the Flyers limited Illinois- Chicago to just 27.8 percent shooting in the contest. The Flames could only make 15 shots from the floor in the entire game in 54 attempts. Meanwhile Dayton shot 51.9 percent in the win, which was paced by Jordan Sibert's 22- point effort. Devon Scott chipped in a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Scoochie Smith contributed 10 points in the victory. The Flyers held advantages in just about every aspect of the game against UIC.
In five games this season, the Flyers are getting double-digit point contribution averages from just two players. Sibert leads the team entering the game against Miami netting 15.6 ppg on 40.4 percent shooting from the field. Dyshawn Pierre checks in behind Sibert at 12.6 ppg, adding in a team- best 7.2 rpg average. As a team, the Flyers have been netting 67.0 ppg through five contests, but the team's defense has stepped up in holding opponents to just 54.8 ppg.
If Miami-Ohio had just a slightly better first half, the RedHawks may be entering the game against Dayton coming off a win instead of a loss. The RedHawks shot 33.3 percent in the opening half, and trailed Elon, 30-26. Miami could only shave off two points of Elon's lead in the second half in the two- point loss. Geovonie McKnight scored 14 points to lead the team, followed by Will Sullivan's 13 points and Eric Washington's 10 with seven assists. Chris Bryant narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, which was a team high.
Sullivan leads the RedHawks this season in scoring at 11.2 ppg. The guard is shooting an impressive 51.2 percent from the floor in six games played, while McKnight (10.2 ppg) has only managed a 36.8 shooting percentage. Washington checks in at 10.0 ppg, and has recorded a team-best 32 assists this season with 10 steals. The RedHawks haven't been as strong on the defensive end, allowing opponents to score an average of 64.5 ppg on 46.1 percent shooting.
Dayton, after making a run last season in the NCAA Tournament, is a serious contender for the Atlantic 10 title, while Miami-Ohio still has plenty of growing to do this season. The RedHawks will be overwhelmed offensively in this one.
