Virginia Tech (11-21) vs. Miami-Florida (20-11)
GAME NOTES: The sixth-seeded Miami Hurricanes will get their postseason underway on Wednesday evening, as they close out second-round action of the ACC Tournament with a showdown with the 14th-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies.
The winner of this game will take on three-seed Notre Dame in Thursday' quarterfinal round.
Jim Larranaga's Hurricanes had a fairly successful campaign this year, as one of six teams in the ACC with at least 20 victories. In conference play, Miami ended the year at 10-8 thanks to wins in two straight and three of its last four games. Miami is just two years removed from their only ACC Tournament title. The team comes into this postseason with an 11-9 record in this event.
Buzz Williams took over this year at Virginia Tech and it will obviously be a work in progress with the Hokies, who finished in the league basement with just two conference wins. The Hokies came into the postseason cold, with a seven-game losing streak in tow, but advanced nonetheless with an 81-80 shootout victory over Wake Forest on Tuesday in the first round.
Miami has won the past three meetings with Virginia Tech and owns a 16-12 edge over the Hokies all-time. The team's met twice this season, with the Hurricanes posting a pair of routs, winning by 20+ points in both affairs.
Not only did freshman Jalen Hudson erupt for a career-high 32 points, but he also hit a jumper with under 12 seconds to play to propel the Hokies into this second-round matchup with the Hurricanes. Hudson came off the bench against Wake Forest and drilled 10-of-18 shots from the floor, while adding 10-of-10 from the free-throw line to ignite Virginia Tech. Fellow freshman Ahmed Hill added 12 points to the cause, while yet another freshman, Justin Bibbs tacked on nine points for the young Hokies, who shot .484 from the field in the game.
Virginia Tech certainly had issues in year one of the Buzz Williams' era, but the team is averaging 65.8 ppg on .447 shooting. Where the Hokies struggled was on the glass, suffering from a -6.3 rebounding margin and at the free- throw line, at a mere .642 efficiency. Adam Smith tops Tech in scoring at 13.5 ppg. Bibbs is also in double figures at 11.7 ppg, while Hill is just under that mark at 8.7 ppg. Hudson (7.0 ppg) has come on strong down the stretch.
The plan coming into this season was that a couple of transfers were going to lead Miami back to ACC glory. That wasn't far from the truth. Although the Hurricanes never really mounted a serious threat to win the ACC crown, both Texas-transfer Sheldon McClellan and Kansas State-transfer Angel Rodriguez were the keys to Miami's success.
Sheldon shot an impressive .500 from the floor and led the 'Canes in scoring at 14.8 ppg. Rodriguez, who picked up All-ACC honors, was productive in several areas, averaging 12.3 ppg, while leading Miami in both assists (4.2 apg) and steals (55). Center Tonye Jekiri (8.5 ppg) was a defensive gem as well, leading the conference in rebounding (10.2 rpg).
The Hokies may have something to build on next season with several young guns getting plenty of minutes. That won't help them against a seasoned team like Miami, though.
