Oklahoma State (7-1) at Memphis (3-3)
GAME NOTES: The Oklahoma State Cowboys hope to bounce back from their first loss of the season when the visit the Memphis Tigers at FedExForum on Saturday evening.
Oklahoma State's first true road test was last Saturday, and the result was not what the Cowboys were hoping for. Not only did they suffer their first defeat of the season, but they managed just 49 points in a 75-49 drubbing at the hands of South Carolina.
After outscoring their first seven opponents by an average of 23.4 points, the Cowboys never led, shot a woeful 24.6 percent from the floor and only made five of their 24 3-point attempts.
Le'Bryan Nash led OSU with 13 points and 10 boards, while Phil Forte, who was coming off a in a career-high 32-point effort against North Texas, managed just five on a horrific 1-of-14 night from the floor.
As Nash and Forte go, so does the OSU offense. The pair are both averaging over 17 ppg, while no one else on the team puts up more than 8.0. Forte's forgettable performance against South Carolina brought his 3-point shooting percentage down to .359, but he does lead the team in steals (24) and minutes (31.6 per game). Nash pulls down a team-best 7.1 rebounds, while Anthony Hickey has been efficient with a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
A few days after losing by double digits to Stephen F Austin, the Tigers bounced back with a 73-45 rout of Bradley last Saturday. Shaq Goodwin posted team-highs of 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Avery Woodson and Nick King each added 11 points in the triumph.
Leading by eight midway through the second half, Memphis went on a 18-6 take control of the contest. The Tigers wound up scoring 29 points off 20 turnovers and owned a 30-8 advantage in points in the paint.
The Tigers were expected to struggle in the early going of the season as they returned just two starters from last year's squad. One of those players, Goodwin, leads the team in scoring (11.8 ppg) and rebounds (7.0 rpg), while connecting on a solid 59.0 percent of his shots.
Austin Nichols is the only other double-digit scorer at 10.2 ppg, as the squad is averaging under 63 points over its first six games.
These teams split a pair of meetings last season, but this is a different Memphis team. The Tigers need a few more games under their belt if they want to compete with a veteran club like OSU.
