Jacksonville State (9-15) at Memphis (13-8)
GAME NOTES: The Memphis Tigers will take a break from American Athletic Conference competition on Wednesday to host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in a non-conference bout at FedEx Forum.
Memphis is coming off an 82-64 loss to Gonzaga - another non-conference opponent - Saturday, which ended a two-game win streak for the Tigers. The hosts in this contest own a 10-3 mark at home this season, and are just 7-5 against non-conference opponents in 2014-15.
Jacksonville State has struggled mightily this season. The Gamecocks are 9-15 and own just a 2-8 record in Ohio Valley Conference play. The team is on a three-game losing streak, having dropped an ugly 45-43 decision to Tennessee State on Saturday. On the road this season, the Gamecocks are a dismal 1-12.
These two sides have met only twice on the court in their series history, with each side taking a decision. The last time the programs met was during the 1938-39 campaign, back when it was known as Jacksonville State Teachers College.
Talk about an ugly shooting performance on Saturday between Jacksonville State and Tennessee State. Somehow the Tigers took down the Gamecocks on a 27.3 shooting percentage from the floor. Jacksonville State connected on just 31.3 percent of its shots from the field, but had only one double-digit scorer in the contest. Darion Rackley netted 16 points to pace the Gamecocks, while D.J. Felder chipped in six points and a team-best 13 rebounds. Jacksonville State hit on just 5-of-24 from 3-point range in the loss, but sent Tennessee State to the free-throw line 30 times, where the Tigers connected on 17 attempts from the charity stripe.
Rackley has been the biggest contributor this season for Jacksonville State, which had higher hopes this season of making a run in a seemingly wide open Ohio Valley Conference. Rackley leads the team with 15.4 ppg, but is shooting just 34.7 percent from the field. Felder is next at 9.5 ppg. As a unit, Jacksonville State is netting 63.0 ppg this season, and is playing a porous style of defense that is allowing opponents to net 68.4 ppg on 44.9 percent shooting. Felder's 5.5 rpg is the best mark on the squad, while JaQuail Townser's 83 assists is the most in the category.
Memphis went up against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday, and was completely outmatched on both ends of the floor. Gonzaga connected on 55.3 percent of its shots from the field, while the Tigers could only manage a 35.1 percent shooting touch. Nick King paced the Tigers in the loss, netting 13 points off the bench with six rebounds. Austin Nichols scored 12 points on 6-of-16 shooting with five boards, and Avery Woodson and Trahson Burrell each chipped in nine points in the loss.
Nichols has been the focal point of the Memphis offense this season, and for good reason. The big man has made a name for himself underneath the basket offensively, currently leading the team in scoring at 13.2 ppg, adding in a team-best 6.0 rpg and a hefty 64 blocked shots (leads the AAC with 3.0 blocks per outing). He's the only Memphis player to average a double-digit scoring total this season, but the Tigers have been just fine on the offensive end with a 67.6 ppg mark, ranked second in the conference. Defensively, the Tigers are allowing just 62.4 ppg to opponents, which doesn't bode so well for Jacksonville State.
The Gamecocks appear to be overmatched in just about every facet entering this matchup. Memphis will use its size to dominate not only on the defensive end, but in the rebound game on the offensive end of the floor. Nichols, Shaq Goodwin and Burrell should be looking forward to taking the floor against struggling Jacksonville State.
