MARYLAND TERRAPINS

Maryland Terrapins

Maryland Terrapins VS. Monmouth Hawks

Monmouth (2-2) at Maryland (5-0)

GAME NOTES: The Maryland Terrapins look to build off their CBE Classic title when they host the Monmouth Hawks Friday in the 2014 CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the XFINITY Center.

Maryland shut down No. 13 Iowa State in the annual tournament title game on Tuesday and pulled out a 72-63 victory. Jared Nickens and Jake Layman scored 15 points apiece, Dez Wells added 14 and Melo Trimble scored 11 for the Terrapins, who are off to their first 5-0 start since the 2006-07 season.

Iowa State came into the game averaging 86 ppg but shot a paltry 29.7 percent from the field against Maryland's stout defense.

Opponents are making just 33.8 percent of their shots against the Terps, who themselves are hitting nearly half of their attempts (49.3 percent). Layman has made two-thirds of his shots and is putting up 13.8 ppg while pacing the team in rebounds (5.4 rpg).

Leading the team in scoring is Wells at 16.2 ppg, while Trimble is adding 14.6 ppg.

Monmouth, meanwhile, is coming off an overtime loss to Towson on Sunday. The Hawks led by 16 at one point late in the first half but wound up on the losing end of a 79-75 decision.

Andrew Nicholas came off the bench and provided quite the spark from the perimeter, hitting 6-of-10 from behind the arc en route to a team-high 24 points. The senior hit a go-ahead 3 with 28 seconds left in overtime, but Alex Gavrilovic answered with a triple of his own at the other end.

Collin Stewart turned the ball over the next time down, and Towson sealed the win at the foul line.

Deon Jones added 16 points and Justin Robinson netted 10 for the Hawks, who lost despite only turning the ball over six times and forcing 17 giveaways.

Nicholas, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career on Sunday, is putting up 13.5 ppg, while Jones leads the way with 14.0 ppg. Brice Kofane is the Hawks' best rebounder at 5.0 rpg, which is a cause for concern considering opponents are pulling down nearly nine more boards per contest. Towson had a 48-26 edge on the glass on Sunday.

Maryland has won all three previous meetings with Monmouth, and Friday's outcome should keep the Terps unbeaten against the Hawks.
