Fordham (1-1) at Maryland (2-0)
GAME NOTES: With two easy wins under their belt, the Maryland Terrapins will remain home for a third straight to battle the Fordham Rams in a non- conference tilt at Xfinity Center.
Fordham sits on a 1-1 record through two games, and will hit the road for the second consecutive time following a 73-54 loss at the hands of Penn State. The Rams return home for a four-game homestand following the game with Maryland.
The Terrapins are 2-0 this season, having won each of their two opening matchups by over 30 points. The Terps downed Wagner to start the season, 82-48, and beat up on Central Connecticut State, 93-57, on Monday.
This meeting between Fordham and Maryland will be the ninth in the all-time series. The Terps hold a 7-1 advantage in those head-to-head contests.
Fordham couldn't do much against Penn State on Sunday, as the Rams found themselves down by 17 points at halftime. Such a large lead at the midway point allowed the Nittany Lions to set things on cruise control in the second half en route to the 19-point victory. Nemanja Zarkovic led all Fordham players with 14 points in the contest, while Christian Sengfelder chipped in with 10 points and eight boards. They were the only two Rams players to notch scoring figures in the double digits for a team that shot a dismal 29.3 percent from the floor. Jon Severe, who was one of the top freshman players in the Atlantic 10 Conference last season, came off the bench and scored zero points on 0-for-5 shooting.
Even after the flop against Penn State, four Rams are still averaging scoring figures in the double digits (though it's through just two games). Eric Paschall leads the team with a 19.0 ppg mark through two starts, and Sengfelder is the next closest with 13.5 ppg. Mandell Thomas adds 11.0 ppg, and Ryan Rhoomes chips in 10.0 ppg with a team-high 10.5 rpg. Fordham is missing center Ryan Canty, who is out after having to undergo back surgery.
Maryland, one of the newest members of the Big Ten Conference, hasn't exactly played the toughest of competition in its first two games. The Terps easily downed both Northeast Conference schools they've played, with a 36-point victory over Central Connecticut State being the most recent of the two. Dez Wells led all Maryland scorers in the contest with 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor. Jake Leyman chipped in with 14 points, and Melo Trimble and Dion Wiley each contributed 10 points in the win. Trimble grabbed a team-best nine rebounds in the lopsided victory, in which the Terrapins shot 55.6 percent from the field.
Wells projects to be one of the top players in the Big Ten this season after he erupted last season in Maryland's final days as an ACC member. Through two games, Wells is averaging 22.5 ppg and shooting 65.4 percent from the floor. Leyman checks in behind Wells at 15.0 ppg with 6.5 rpg, and Trimble adds 11.5 ppg with 5.0 rpg. The Terps have been shooting the lights out, netting 55.1 percent of their field goal tries and scoring a combined 175 points through their first two outings.
Fordham doesn't appear to have as strong a lineup as it did a season ago when the Rams finished 10-21 overall with a 2-14 mark in conference play. Give it time, and the lineup should come together. Meanwhile, Wells and his Terrapins are already on fire, and will look to make it three in a row at home.
