Huntington, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - D.J. Newbill netted 17 points to lift the Penn State Nittany Lions to a 73-69 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd in a non-conference tilt at the Cam Henderson Center.

Brandon Taylor and John Johnson also contributed 17 points each for PSU (8-1). Ross Travis led all players on the glass with nine rebounds.

Jay Johnson paced the Thundering Herd (3-5) with 19 points. Ryan Taylor and Aleksa Nikolic chipped in 10 points apiece, while Tamron Manning provided 12 points in 22 minutes off the bench. The loss was the fifth in a row for Marshall.

Although the Nittany Lions shot just 40 percent from the floor in the first half, they managed to head into the intermission on top, 31-24. Marshall was limited to 26.9 percent efficiency from the floor in the opening stanza.

PSU managed to extend its lead to 37-24 by the 17:17 mark of the second period, but the Herd battled back and cut the deficit to a single point, at 66-65, with just over a minute left to play. Donovan Jack scored four consecutive points to give the Nittany Lions some breathing room, but Marshall refused to go away. Nikolic made a layup with five seconds remaining in regulation to reduce PSU's lead to 71-69, but Newbill sealed the win for the visitors with a pair of made free-throw attempts on the other end.

The Herd were outrebounded, 46-35.
