MARQUETTE GOLDEN EAGLES

Marquette Golden Eagles

Marquette Golden Eagles VS. Seton Hall Pirates

Seton Hall (13-6) at Marquette (10-9)

GAME NOTES: With each team desperately trying to stop a three-game losing streak, the Seton Hall Pirates and Marquette Golden Eagles will clash head-to- head in a Big East Conference showdown at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Seton Hall's three-game slide began with an overtime loss to Butler, and was extended on Sunday with yet another loss to the same Bulldogs, this time in Indianapolis. Butler easily handled the Pirates, 77-57, which was Seton Hall's fourth conference loss. The Pirates are 2-4 away from home.

Marquette's third straight defeat came against Georgetown on Saturday. The Hoyas needed overtime, but eventually took down the Golden Eagles, 95-85, handing Marquette its fifth Big East loss. The Golden Eagles are 8-3 at home this season, though.

Marquette owns a hefty series lead over Seton Hall in just the 13 games played against the Pirates all-time. The Golden Eagles have won 11 of the 13 matchups, which includes each of the last three meetings. The two teams are set to play in New Jersey the first week in February, as well.

Seton Hall hadn't done much with its No. 24 national ranking, and Butler has been the primary reason why the Pirates are no longer among the ranked teams. The Bulldogs dominated Seton Hall in Indianapolis on Sunday, shooting 49.1 percent from the floor, while the Pirates connected on a lowly 36.7 percent shooting. Brandon Mobley scored a team-high 15 points to lead the visiting Pirates, while Desi Rodriguez added 12 points and Sterling Gibbs chipped in with 10 points. Angel Delgado brought down a team-high seven boards in the lopsided defeat.

After the departure of several big-name contributors following last season's campaign for Seton Hall, Gibbs has had to step up his play on the offensive end of the floor. He hasn't been so hot lately in Seton Hall's skid, but the guard has still asserted himself with a team-best and third-in-conference scoring mark of 16.3 pp. He also has a team-best 67 assists to his credit. Isaiah Whitehead (11.9 ppg) is still out with a stress fracture in his right foot, so Mobley (10.1 ppg) is the only other active Seton Hall player averaging double-figure scoring. Delgado's 9.5 rpg is a team best, and ranks first in the Big East heading into Wednesday. The Pirates are scoring 69.6 ppg on 43 percent shooting this season.

Marquette found itself down at halftime to Georgetown on Saturday by six points, but the Golden Eagles were able to erase the difference in the second period to knot the score, 81-81, at the end of regulation. Although they had the momentum and the home advantage, the Eagles were still downed by the Hoyas in the extra session. Duane Wilson and Matt Carlino each scored 26 points to lead the team in defeat, while Juan Anderson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Derrick Wilson chipped in with seven assists.

Marquette this season doesn't utilize much of its bench, as only eight players have seen action on the floor in any of the team's 19 games played. Since the Golden Eagles began Big East play, Carlino has really stepped up his offensive attack. The transfer guard from BYU leads the team averaging 14.6 ppg this season, and is shooting a blistering 43.9 percent from 3-point range. Duane Wilson (11.8 ppg) and Luke Fischer (10.5 ppg) round out a trio of double-digit scorers for a Marquette squad netting 68.0 ppg as a unit - second worst in the Big East. Meanwhile, the team is giving up 65.1 ppg.

Neither of these teams is trending in the right direction, although Marquette gets a bit of a boost with the home advantage. Seton Hall's dangerous scoring options have disappeared of late, while Marquette simply needs to generate more on the offensive end. This could be a down-to-the-wire finish.

Predicted Outcome

Seton Hall 65, Marquette 62
