North Dakota (4-6) at Marquette (6-4)
GAME NOTES: The Marquette Golden Eagles will look for their third win during a five-game homestand when they take on North Dakota in non-conference action at the Bradley Center.
North Dakota played its first home game in over a month on Friday, when they easily handled the Dickinson State Blue Hawks, 78-48. The victory improved UND's record to 4-6.
After splitting their first two games during a five-game homestand, the Golden Eagles blew out the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Friday, 83-49, at the Al McGuire Center. The win bumped Marquette's record to 6-4.
This will mark the first ever time these two schools have met on the hardwood.
Jaron Nash and Estan Tyler each netted 13 points a piece in North Dakota's victory over Dickinson State. Other UND players to net double figures were Terrel de Rouen (12 points) and reserve Josiah Coleman (10 points). North Dakota finished with its best shooting percentage this season, as it connected on 57.1 percent of its field goal attempts, and its best point total, with 78. Defensively, UND held the Blue Hawks to a shooting percentage of just 34.5. North Dakota also forced 23 Dickinson State turnovers, which it converted into 18 points. UND's reserves also outscored the Blue Hawks' bench, 30-7.
Both Nash (12.3 ppg) and Tyler (11.0 ppg) have been averaging double figures for UND this season. Nash has also been North Dakota's top rebounder, averaging 7.6 boards a game, which ranks him sixth for rebounding in the Big Sky Conference. North Dakota has only managed 62.7 ppg this season, placing them second to last in scoring offense in the Big Sky. UND is also struggling from beyond the arc, as it makes just 32.1 percent of its 3-point tries. Defensively, North Dakota is allowing teams to connect on 47.7 percent of their field goal tries, placing them second to last in field-goal percent defense in the Big Sky.
Reserve Luke Fischer scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds in Marquette's victory over Alabama A&M. Steve Taylor Jr. (16 points, six rebounds), Juan Anderson (13 points, seven rebounds), and Matt Carlino (eight points, eight assists) all played well in the victory. The Golden Eagles shot an impressive 61.2 percent from the field, and converted 18-of-21 from the free throw line. Defensively, Marquette limited the Bulldogs to a 35.3 shooting percentage, which included a mark of 4-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles won the rebounding battle (32-22), and outscored Alabama A&M in the paint (42-24).
In Fischer's only two games this season, he has averaged 20.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg. Carlino and Duane Wilson have been the top two scorers for Marquette through ten games, as they each hold an average of 12.7 ppg. Anderson is also averaging double figures with 11.2 ppg. Marquette is currently shooting a respectable 46.4 percent from the field, but its 69.9 ppg ranks them dead last in the Big East Conference. The Golden Eagles are also last in the Big East in field-goal percent defense, as they allow teams to shoot 45.4 percent on their field goal attempts, and for rebounding margin (-6.2). Despite these low rankings, Marquette has does rank first in the Big East in the turnover margin (+4.90).
With Luke Fischer providing a spark to the Golden Eagles on offense, North Dakota may not be able to keep up with Marquette in this one.
