Arizona State (6-3) at Marquette (4-4)
GAME NOTES: The Marquette Golden Eagles try to get back above .500 on Tuesday night, as they host the Arizona State Sun Devils in non-conference play at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Now under the direction of first-year head coach Steve Wojciechowski, a long- time assistant at Duke, the Golden Eagles have had trouble finding consistency from one game to the next. The team is coming off a 49-38 loss against nationally-ranked Wisconsin 10 days ago, marking the squad's second loss in the last three outings.
As for the Sun Devils, they haven't had nearly the amount of time off between contests, as they last took the floor over the weekend in an 81-74 victory over Pepperdine at home. The win was the third in the last four outings for an ASU squad that lost back-to-back games against Maryland and Alabama during the CBE Classic in Kansas City last month.
Marquette leads the all-time series by a 2-1 margin, although the Sun Devils won the most recent meeting last season by a score of 79-77.
The Sun Devils had to fight their way back from a two-point deficit at the half against Pepperdine, following a 20-minute span in which the hosts missed all six chances behind the 3-point line and shot just 7-of-12 at the free- throw line. In the second half, ASU ended up feasting at the charity stripe (27-of-36), an effort that helped to seal the win for the Sun Devils.
Shaquielle McKissic registered a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Eric Jacobsen with 20 points and nine boards of his own. Also scoring in double figures were Gerry Blakes and Tra Holder with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Through nine games, Blakes leads the ASU offense with 12.2 ppg, even though he has connected on only 31.3 percent from 3-point range. Jacobsen and McKissic pitch in with 11.7 and 10.1 ppg, respectively, the latter stepping into the paint to produce a team-best 8.0 rpg, which has helped the group generate a rebounding advantage of 5.6 rpg over the competition.
Marquette ran into one of the toughest defenses in the nation the last time out, producing a mere 38 points in front of the hometown crowd in an 11-point loss versus Wisconsin. The Golden Eagles, who had a mere 15 points at the half, converted a woeful 13-of-45 from the floor, but at least six of those came from 3-point range in order to make things interesting. Matt Carlino, the transfer from BYU, dropped in 18 points and Juan Anderson pulled down 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
Carlino, a native of Arizona, has scored in double figures in three of the last four games and a total of six times so far this season, and that has him leading the team overall at 13.8 ppg. Duane Wilson accounts for 12.5 ppg and Anderson another 11.6 ppg for a program that is dealing with a pair of recent defections in Deonte Burton and John Dawson who left the program at the end of the first semester and plan to transfer.
With a roster that is now even shorter on talent, Marquette will be hard- pressed to keep up with a Sun Devils team that likes to open up the offense and run the floor.
