Recap: Loyola-Chicago vs. Boise State
Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - Christian Thomas scored a game-high 17 points as the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers defeated the Boise State Broncos, 48-45, in the title game of the Las Vegas Classic at Orleans Arena.
Thomas knocked down 7-of-10 shots from the floor for the Ramblers (10-2) as they registered their sixth win in a row. Montel James added 10 points and five rebounds for the squad as well.
The Broncos (10-3) failed to have a single player score in double figures as they had a six-game win streak come to an end. James Webb III managed to come up with nine points and nine rebounds in the setback.
Both sides started out cold, with each scoring just two points through the first several minutes of action. The Broncos actually claimed a 27-22 advantage at the break after shooting just 33.3 percent from the field and 3- of-14 behind the 3-point line.
In the second half BSU knocked down a mere six field goals, compared to 11 for the Ramblers, the former also connecting on just 3-of-16 beyond the arc.
After Loyola scored five straight points down the stretch, taking a 48-45 lead, Boise State had a chance to tie at the buzzer but a 3-pointer by Nick Duncan from the left wing came up short of the rim. Duncan, who had been suffering from a sprained right ankle, finished the meeting a woeful 1-of-10 from the floor and missed all eight of his long-distance attempts.
In a game that featured four ties and five lead changes, Loyola survived despite turning the ball over five more times than the competition and shooting only 3-of-13 on the perimeter.
The Broncos were playing without both leading scorer Derrick Marks (16.7 ppg) and Anthony Drmic (15.0 ppg).
