Bradley (3-5) at Kansas State (4-4)
GAME NOTES: With losses in three of their last four games, the Kansas State Wildcats will try to right the ship against the Bradley Braves in a non- conference collision at Bramlage Coliseum.
Like Kansas State, Bradley has lost three of its last four games, including a 73-45 rout at the hands of Memphis on Saturday. The Braves are just 3-5 overall, with the loss against the Tigers coming in their first true road game. They will be at home against Division III Eureka next.
Kansas State nearly stunned Tennessee last time out, but its late rally fell short in a 65-64 loss. The Wildcats have split their eight games overall, but they have had success at home (3-0). They will remain in hosting mode for their next game against Savannah State.
The all-time series between these teams is tied at 2-2. Kansas State earned victories in each of the last two meetings, with a 73-61 triumph in 1996 following a 75-72 win in 1995.
Clearly, there was very little that went right for Bradley against Memphis. The Braves connected on a miserable 27.1 percent of their shots from the floor, while turning the ball over 20 times and tallying only six assists. They also scored an anemic eight points in the paint, while letting up 30 to the Tigers. Omari Grier finished with 14 points as the only player for Bradley to finish in double figures.
Failing to score much or shoot well is nothing new for the Braves. They are averaging only 60.1 points per game and knocking down a paltry 38 percent of their shots from the floor. At least they usually put up a fight on defense, letting up 63.1 points on 41.4 percent field goal accuracy. Warren Jones (14.6 ppg) is the team's leading scorer despite shooting 35.2 percent from the floor and starting only twice. Grier (11.5 ppg) and Auston Barnes (10.7 ppg) are the other consistent double-digit scoring threats.
Kansas State trailed, 60-50, with a minute to play against Tennessee, but the Wildcats were not done. Marcus Foster nailed four 3-pointers in the final 60 seconds to pull the Wildcats within one with two seconds remaining, but that didn't leave enough time for him to make a fifth. Foster finished with a game- high 23 points to lead the Wildcats, who shot 40.8 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 22 times.
Normally, the Wildcats are a bit better offensively, as they have made 46.8 percent of their shots from the floor this season. That has yielded a decent scoring average (74 ppg), although they have not been all that much better than their opponents (70.3 ppg). Foster (15.9 ppg) is clearly the go-to guy offensively, but Thomas Gipson (12.1 ppg) and Nino Williams (11.3 ppg) are reliable alternatives. Williams had 10 points and eight rebounds against Tennessee, while Gipson managed only six points.
Assuming K-State is able to find more offensive success on its home floor, it should have no trouble getting past Bradley.
