Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Khristian Smith logged 27 points and nine rebounds, as the Indiana State Sycamores used a dominant overtime period to down the IUPUI Jaguars, 79-66, in the season opener for both teams at Fairgrounds Coliseum.

Devonte Brown tallied 19 points and seven rebounds for Indiana State (1-0), draining 11-of-13 from the foul line. Brenton Scott came off the bench to score 14 for the visitors.

For IUPUI (0-1), Marcellus Barksdale and Mason Archie netted 12 and 11 points, respectively, while DavRon Williams ripped down 11 rebounds.

IUPUI held a slim 34-32 advantage heading into intermission after outshooting Indiana State from the field in the opening 20 minutes, 44 percent to 36 percent.

The teams played tight throughout the second half. With seven seconds left, Brown made 1-of-2 free throws to extend Indiana State's advantage to 64-62, but then with under a second remaining Barksdale was fouled on the other end of the floor. He made both free throws to tie the score and force overtime.

Indiana State controlled the extra session, shooting 4-of-5 from the field and 7-of-8 at the line. IUPUI, meanwhile, was just 1-of-8 from the floor in the final five minutes.

The Sycamores' busy night at the charity stripe (36-of-46) gave them a clear edge over the Jaguars (17-of-23).
