Recap: Illinois State vs. Youngstown St
Normal, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Bobby Hunter paced four teammates in double figures with 20 points, as the Illinois State Redbirds held off the Youngstown State Penguins in overtime, 85-73, in non-conference action at Redbird Arena.
Hunter shot 4-of-6 from 3-point range for Illinois State (3-2). Deontae Hawkins tallied a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds, DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell also scored 18 and Reggie Lynch netted 10 and blocked seven shots.
For Youngstown State (4-4), Marcus Keene led all scorers with 29 points on 10- of-17 from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. D.J. Cole and Shawn Amiker chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Illinois State took a 32-24 lead into intermission after outshooting Youngstown State from the field in the first half, 41.4 percent to 29 percent.
The tables were turned in the second stanza, with the Penguins shooting 60 percent to the Redbirds' 37 percent. After trailing by seven with under seven minutes to play, Illinois State climbed back to take a one-point lead with 34 seconds left following a pair of Hawkins free throws. Youngstown State had a chance to take the lead at the foul line with 21 seconds remaining, but Cole had a 1-of-2 trip to tie the score and force overtime.
Illinois State dominated the overtime period, 20-8, to capture the victory.
The Redbirds held a firm advantage in the rebounding battle, 50-29.
