St. Thomas, VI (SportsNetwork.com) - DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell and Bobby Hunter both scored 12 points as the Illinois State Redbirds defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs, 64-45, in the semifinal round of the 2014 Paradise Jam.

Also scoring in double figures for the Redbirds (2-1) were Deontae Hawkins and Reggie Lynch with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Monarchs (3-1) were paced by Trey Freeman with 16 points on a mere 6-of-17 shooting from the floor, including 1-of-8 behind the 3-point line. Richard Ross checked in with 15 points in the setback, the first of the season for ODU.

Illinois State scored the first points of the contest and never looked back, leading by a score of 33-24 at the intermission after shooting 43.8 percent from the floor.

In the second half the Redbirds elevated their accuracy from the field to 57.9 percent in order to cruise to the victory.

ODU was charged with 13 turnovers, which Illinois State traded in for 20 points on the night.
