Brown (1-3) at Illinois (3-0)
GAME NOTES: The Illinois Fighting Illini will try to keep a perfect record going as they host the Brown Bears in a non-conference clash at State Farm Arena on Monday as part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational.
Brown opened its season with a win over Saint Peter's, but has since fallen in three consecutive outings to Northwestern, Holy Cross and, most recently, Indiana State, 78-66.
Illinois hasn't exactly played the toughest schedule through three games, evidenced by a few lopsided scores. But the team's confidence is sky high after a 107-66 thumping of Austin Peay on Friday, which is back-to-back games in which the Illini have scored over 100 points.
The all-time series between Brown and Illinois will be starting Monday with this matchup.
Brown trailed Indiana State by 11 points at halftime, and couldn't make up any of the deficit in the second half en route to the defeat. The Bears shot just 39 percent from the floor in the contest, and allowed the Sycamores to net 48.2 percent of their field goal attempts. Leland King had a strong game for Brown, netting 25 points with 12 rebounds for the double-double. Rafael Maia chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds, but it wasn't enough to keep the Bears in the game.
King leads a group of three Brown players in double-digit scoring figures this season through four games, averaging 19.0 ppg, shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and adding a team-best 7.8 rpg. Although most of his stats are solid, King does average 4.0 turnovers per outing as well. Cedric Kuakumensah averages 11.2 ppg for the Bears, followed by Tavon Blackmon's 10.0 ppg mark. As a unit, Brown is scoring 64.2 ppg and giving up 71.2 ppg to opponents through four games.
Talk about offensive explosions, and Illinois is right at the center of those discussions. The Illini have scored more than 100 points in back-to-back contests, with the 107-66 dousing of Austin Peay being the most recent. Illinois shot a whopping 75 percent from the floor in the second half of the contest, scoring 61 points in the frame. Rayvonte Rice and Malcolm Hill each led Illinois in the contest with 16 points, the pair adding six rebounds apiece to their stat lines. Kendrick Nunn came off the bench to score 14 points, Nnanna Egwu chipped in 13 points and Ahmad Starks rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with 12 points in the win.
It's been an absurd start to the year offensively for Illinois, which is led by Rice's 18.0 ppg. Rice is connecting on 70.4 percent of his field goal tries this season, and has made 77.8 percent from 3-point range in three games. Hill (13.3 ppg) and Starks (13.3 ppg) are tied for second on the team in scoring, with Aaron Cosby (13.0 ppg) and Nunn (10.7 ppg) not too far off the pace. Hill (7.3 rpg) is first on the team in rebounding, with Rice (6.7 rpg) not a distant second. The Illini are averaging 100.3 ppg through three contests, which will come down at some point.
Even though the blistering pace offensively for Illinois won't keep up as the season progresses, especially when the Illini get into the conference portion of their schedule, the 100.3 ppg average should only take a slight dip against Brown, which hasn't done much to limit opponents' scoring this season.
