Recap: Ill-Chicago vs. Western Ill
Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Wiegand notched a double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Illinois-Chicago Flames past the Western Illinois Leathernecks, 67-64, in non-conference play at UIC Pavilion.
Wiegand shot 9-of-17 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free-throw line for the Flames (1-1). Paris Burns tallied 13 points in the win.
JC Fuller netted 14 points on 6-of-10 from the floor for the Leathernecks (0-2). Garret Covington added seven points and nine assists before fouling out.
The teams looked evenly matched in the first half, with the Leathernecks shooting 45.2 percent from the field to the Flames' 41.4 percent. The two sides went into the locker room tied 35-35.
Both sides had trouble offensively in the second half, with the Flames dropping to just 32 percent and their opponents not much better at 32.3 percent from the floor. The Flames, however, were able to knock down 16-of-18 at the free-throw line to help close out the game. Their largest lead was nine points, with 3:59 left to play.
A layup by Fuller with 20 seconds remaining brought the visitors to within one point, but D'Juan Miller was able to hit both free throws for the Flames with 13 seconds left to seal the victory.
The game, which saw seven lead changes, was largely decided in the paint, where the home team outscored the visitors 30-20.
