Recap: Houston vs. Boise State
Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - Derrick Marks netted 14 points to lead the Boise State Broncos to a 75-73 overtime victory in the first round of the Las Vegas Classic at Orleans Arena Monday night.
Mikey Thompson chipped in with 13 points for Boise State (10-2), while Igor Hadziomerovic and Rob Heyer each added 11 in the win, which was the sixth straight for the Broncos. James Webb III registered 10 points in the victory. Boise State will take on Loyola Chicago Tuesday for the Las Vegas Classic title.
L.J. Rose netted 16 points with seven assists to pace Houston (5-4), which has dropped three consecutive contests. Danrad Knowles contributed 15 points with 12 rebounds for the double-double for Houston. Devonta Pollard netted 12 points with nine rebounds, Jherrod Stiggers added 11 points and LeRon Barnes chipped in with 10 in the loss. Houston will play Texas Tech Tuesday to determine a third-place finisher.
Boise State took a 31-22 lead into the midway break after connecting on 38.5 percent shooting from the floor in the first half. Houston made a dismal 28.6 percent of its field goal tries in the frame, including 2-of-17 from 3-point range.
The Broncos picked it up to 57.9 percent from the field in the second half, but the Cougars made a run in the period by shooting 44.4 percent, adding in 11-of-18 from the free-throw line to tie it up, 62-62, at the end of regulation.
Clutch 6-of-10 free-throw shooting in the extra session allowed Boise State to take a 75-71 lead, but with 10 seconds left Houston cut the deficit to 75-73. A 3-point try by Stiggers at the buzzer didn't fall, as the Broncos held on for the victory.
Each team made eight 3-pointers, and only one rebound separated Houston (42 boards) and Boise State (41) in the contest. But the Broncos owned a slight 19-17 edge in made free throws in the victory.
