Recap: Hawaii vs. High Point
Honolulu, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Weary's three-point play gave High Point the lead for good in the closing minutes and the Panthers went on to a 62-54 victory over Hawaii in the Rainbow Classic early Tuesday morning.
The Panthers (3-0) trailed by nine late in the second half, but closed the contest with a 20-3 run to pull out the victory. John Brown scored 19 points for High Point, while Tarique Thompson added 13. Weary finished with 10.
Mike Thomas led Hawaii (2-1) with 14 points and Isaac Fleming chipped in 11.
Hawaii opened a 31-27 halftime lead, but High Point started the second half with a 10-1 run. The Rainbow Warriors answered with 10 straight for a 42-37 edge and built the advantage to nine soon after.
High Point still trailed by nine, 51-42, with just under six minutes to play when Thompson made two free throws to ignite the game-ending run. A 3-pointer by Devante Wallace tied it for the Panthers at 51-51 with 3:55 remaining and Anthony Lindauer made two from the line to put High Point in front less than a minute later.
Fleming's layup ended Hawaii's lengthy drought and tied the game with 2:16 to play, but Weary was fouled while scoring off the rebound of a Brown miss and converted the free throw with 1:43 left to put the Panthers on top for good at 56-53.
Negus Chan-Webster missed a 3-pointer for Hawaii and Stefan Jovanovic was fouled while coming down with the offensive rebound, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. The Panthers then made enough free throws to seal the contest.
