Syracuse (10-4) at Georgia Tech (9-4)
GAME NOTES: The Syracuse Orange will try to pick up another ACC road win on Wednesday when they visit the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at McCamish Pavilion.
Syracuse held on for a 68-66 win over Virginia Tech in its conference opener over the weekend, despite nearly blowing a 22-point lead.
Trevor Cooney had 18 points and Rakeem Christmas scored 17 to go along with nine rebounds and three blocks for the Orange, who earned their first true road win and improved to 10-4 overall with a fourth straight victory.
Virginia Tech used a 21-7 run to climb within 51-49 down the stretch, but Syracuse answered with eight of the next nine points. The game was not over at that point, however, as the Hokies had a chance to win at the buzzer after Ron Patterson missed a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds left. Malik Muller's 3-pointer from the left corner, though, was off the mark.
Syracuse's famed zone defense has limited opponents to 58.4 ppg on 37.4 percent shooting. The offense has not held up its end at times this season, but Christmas has been consistent to the tune of 17.3 ppg.
Cooney is hitting just 36.3 percent of his 3-point attempts and the Orange are making a horrid 29.0 percent as a group out on the perimeter. Cooney and Chris McCullough are logging 13.5 and 10.0 ppg, respectively.
Georgia Tech is coming off a hard-fought 83-76 loss in double-overtime at Notre Dame on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets squandered an early double-digit lead and had a chance to win in regulation, only to have a layup by Marcus Georges- Hunt get blocked by Zach Auguste. Notre Dame scored nine of the first 11 points in the second overtime to pull away for good.
Georges-Hunt led Georgia Tech with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Charles Mitchell posted 14 points and 12 boards in defeat, the team's second in its last three games.
The Yellow Jackets, who sit at 9-4, are putting up just 67.5 ppg and shoot even worse than Syracuse from behind the arc, making just 23.9 percent. Georges-Hunt leads the team in scoring with 13.5 ppg, Mitchell is next at 10.6 ppg and tops the team in rebounding (7.8 rpg), and center Demarco Cox (9.0 ppg. 6.0 rpg) adds some support up front.
Georgia Tech leads the all-time series with Syracuse, 3-2, and pulled out a road win in their first ACC matchup last season. The Yellow Jackets should make it back-to-back victories and get the bad taste out of their mouth from their setback in South Bend.
