IPFW (2-0) at Georgia Tech (2-0)
GAME NOTES: Georgia Tech wraps up its season-opening three-game homestand with a visit from IPFW on Friday night.
The Yellow Jackets have reeled off victories over Georgia and Alabama A&M in the last week, defeating the latter, 66-46, on Tuesday. Demarco Cox led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points, while fellow transfer Charles Mitchell added 12 and 14 rebounds in the rout. Mitchell appears to be a competent replacement for Robert Carter, who transferred to Maryland.
Both victories have seen Georgia Tech hold its opponent under 42 percent shooting, so the defense has been solid. The team has won despite rather bland offensive numbers though. The Yellow Jackets are shooting a modest .437 from the floor overall, a number weighed down by an ugly .286 effort from long range (10-of-35). Mitchell leads three players in double-digit scoring through two games with 16.0 ppg. Quinton Stephens is next at 14.5 ppg, followed by Cox (11.5 ppg). Mitchell has also dominated on the glass, with 23 rebounds in the first two outings.
Also coming off two wins to begin the campaign is IPFW, which has knocked off Manchester and Southern Illinois Edwardsville.
Isaiah McCray poured in a career-high 23 points in the win over SIUE and also pulled down 12 rebounds and handed out six assists. He orchestrated a 16-0 run in the second half that flipped an eight-point deficit into an eight-point lead. Joe Edwards and Steve Forbes contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively, in the winning effort.
Through two games, the Mastodons are averaging 74.0 ppg, on an effective .464 shooting. McCray is averaging a double-double early on with 15.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Scoring depth comes in the form of Edwards (13.5 ppg), Forbes (12.0 ppg) and Mo Evans (11.5 ppg).
The only time Georgia Tech has faced a Summit League opponent came in 2001 in a loss to IUPUI. The Mastodons can make it two straight, which would move them to 3-0 for the first time since 1999, but the Yellow Jackets are poised to start the season with three consecutive wins for the third straight year.
