Vanderbilt (11-8) at Georgia (13-5)
GAME NOTES: The Vanderbilt Commodores will hit the road Tuesday trying to end a five-game losing streak, but they'll have to do so against the Georgia Bulldogs in an SEC tilt at Stegeman Coliseum.
Vanderbilt nearly put an end to its skid on Saturday against LSU, but the Commodores came up short in an overtime battle against the Tigers, 79-75. Vandy is just 1-5 against conference competition this season, and is 1-4 away from home.
That has the Bulldogs licking their chops for the Tuesday matchup, as Georgia enters the fray with a 9-1 mark in Athens this season. The Bulldogs have won three games in a row, with a 72-66 defeat of Mississippi State serving as the most recent outing. Georgia is 4-2 in SEC play this season.
Vanderbilt and Georgia continue their deep-seeded rivalry with the 140th meeting set to take place Tuesday. The Commodores lead the all-time series against the Bulldogs, 90-49, although Georgia took the most recent head-to- head matchup earlier this season in a 70-67 victory in Nashville.
Vanderbilt took a five-point lead over LSU into halftime in Saturday's clash, 35-30. But when the final buzzer sounded, the Tigers had knotted the contest up, giving them the momentum headed into the extra session that spelled doom for Vandy. The Commodores shot 42.9 percent from the floor in the game, and were led in scoring by Luke Kornet's 22-point effort off the bench. Wade Baldwin IV collected 18 points in the overtime loss, and Damian Jones chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds.
Freshman Riley LaChance added eight points and six assists in the loss to LSU, which fell below his scoring average on the season at 13.2 ppg. He checks in at second on the team behind Jones, who nets 15.6 ppg on an impressive 54.7 percent shooting touch from the floor. Jones also leads Vanderbilt in rebounding, bringing down 7.1 rpg, and adding in 1.8 blocks per outing, good for fourth in the SEC. The Commodores are netting 70.9 ppg this season, and are using a strong defensive effort to hold opponents to 63.4 ppg on 39.9 percent shooting. Baldwin (4.3 apg) ranks fifth in the conference in assists per outing.
Georgia stepped up its defensive effort on Saturday and held Mississippi State to just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor. The visiting Bulldogs also netted 48.9 percent of their shots in Starkville, including 11-of-18 from 3- point range to take the road victory. J.J. Frazier was a one-man scoring machine for Georgia, as the guard scored a game-high 37 points on 12-of-14 shooting, adding in seven rebounds and a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from 3-point distance. Kenny Gaines was the only other Bulldog to net a double-digit scoring figure with 10 points in the win.
Marcus Thornton was essentially absent from the scoring sheet against Mississippi State, as the forward netted just three points in his team's victory. Still, Thornton currently leads the way with 13.4 ppg and a team-high 7.3 rpg mark. He tops a group of five total players averaging double figures this season, and is tailed by Gaines (11.8 ppg), Charles Mann (11.4 ppg), Nemanja Djurisic (10.7 ppg) and Frazier (10.7 ppg). They are the primary factors in Georgia's offense, which averages 72.4 ppg.
Going on the road to face a very dangerous Bulldogs team is not the best way for the Commodores to attempt to end a losing streak. Vanderbilt could become overwhelmed by a strong Georgia attack early on, in which case the Bulldogs could coast through for another SEC victory.
